Kalyan-Murbad Railway Route Revised to Titwala Amid Highway Project
The long-pending Kalyan-Murbad railway line project in Maharashtra is undergoing a significant route revision, with the state government now proposing to shift its starting point from Shahad to Titwala railway station. This strategic move aims to reduce project costs and prevent alignment conflicts with the ongoing Mumbai–Delhi highway project, which passes through the Rayta area.
Tragic Accident Highlights Urgent Need for Rail Connectivity
The development gains urgency following a tragic road accident on National Highway 61 near the partially opened Rayta bridge, which claimed 11 lives. This incident has starkly highlighted the critical lack of robust transportation infrastructure connecting Murbad, a largely rural taluka in Thane district, to major urban centers.
Local residents have long expressed concerns about Murbad's heavy dependence on road connectivity via Kalyan for access to Mumbai. This reliance makes travel not only time-consuming but also hazardous, particularly given the region's challenging terrain and traffic conditions. The recent fatal accident has intensified public and political calls for expediting the railway project to provide a safer, more efficient alternative.
Project Details and Proposed Benefits
The Central Railway had previously sanctioned the 28-kilometer rail corridor with an estimated cost of Rs 836 crore. The project was planned on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis between Indian Railways and the Maharashtra government. The original alignment via Shahad, Ambivli, Kamba Road, and Apti was designed to significantly improve regional connectivity.
The proposed railway line is expected to dramatically reduce travel time between Kalyan and Murbad from nearly one hour to approximately 30 minutes. This improvement would not only enhance daily commutes for residents but also boost economic activity and accessibility in the region.
Political Support and Coordination Efforts
BJP MLA Kisan Kathore has confirmed that the route revision via Titwala is being actively considered due to the ongoing Delhi-Mumbai highway project work near the Ulhas river. This adjustment is seen as necessary to avoid technical and logistical conflicts between the two major infrastructure initiatives.
Meanwhile, Bhiwandi MP Suresh Mhatre, popularly known as Balya Mama, has announced that a coordination committee will be formed to fast-track the railway project. "The need for priority execution cannot be overstated," Mhatre emphasized, highlighting the project's importance for regional development and public safety.
