Jaipur Railway Decentralization: NWR Unveils Major Satellite Terminal Strategy

In a significant infrastructure move designed to combat growing congestion, North Western Railway (NWR) has announced comprehensive plans for a decentralised railway terminal system in Jaipur. This initiative targets the transformation of key suburban stations into fully functional terminal hubs capable of handling increased passenger traffic and expanded train operations.

Addressing Critical Congestion at Jaipur Junction

Currently, Jaipur Junction stands as one of the region's busiest railway facilities, managing approximately 268 trains daily while accommodating footfall exceeding 200,000 passengers. With passenger numbers continuing their upward trajectory, NWR is implementing proactive measures to distribute this load across multiple locations.

Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer of NWR, emphasized the urgency of these developments on Friday, stating: "With our congestion issues at Jaipur Junction becoming increasingly pronounced, strengthening surrounding stations is essential to distributing passenger traffic more evenly across the city."

Strategic Station Upgrades Across Jaipur

The decentralization strategy focuses on several key suburban stations:

  1. Gandhi Nagar Station: Already upgraded to handle stoppages for 82 trains, this facility now serves nearly 14,000 passengers daily, significantly reducing pressure on Jaipur Junction.
  2. Khatipura Station: Positioned to become a major satellite terminal, this location is receiving a substantial investment of nearly Rs 205 crore for a Coach Care Complex that will maintain modern rolling stock including Vande Bharat trains and LHB coaches. Currently serving around 2,500 daily passengers.
  3. Dehar Ka Balaji Station: Located on the Jaipur-Neem Ka Thana and Jaipur-Sikar routes, this station is undergoing infrastructure enhancements to better serve approximately 4,500 daily passengers across 26 trains. Upgrades include a second station entrance (estimated cost: Rs 13.5 crore), lift installations, and expanded platform shelters.
  4. Sanganer Station: Development plans under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme involve an estimated investment of Rs 107 crore for modern facilities including lifts, escalators, improved waiting areas, and renovated station buildings.

Long-Term Vision with Mega Terminal Proposal

Beyond these immediate upgrades, NWR has proposed an ambitious Mega Coaching Terminal at Bhatton Ki Gali, near Dehar Ka Balaji. This project represents a substantial long-term investment forecast at approximately Rs 800 crore, signaling NWR's commitment to comprehensive railway infrastructure enhancement throughout the region.

The combined investment across all these projects exceeds Rs 1,100 crore, demonstrating the scale of NWR's commitment to transforming Jaipur's railway network. By creating multiple efficient terminal stations capable of handling increased passenger traffic and train operations, NWR aims to fundamentally reshape how rail transportation functions in one of Rajasthan's most important urban centers.
