India and South Korea Agree to Restart CEPA Negotiations Amid Trade Concerns
India and South Korea have jointly agreed to restart negotiations aimed at upgrading the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a trade pact first signed in 2010. This decision comes as Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has strongly criticized the existing agreement, describing it as "lopsided" and "irrational" due to its failure to adequately benefit India and its contribution to a widening trade deficit between the two nations.
Goyal Flags Need for Modern Framework Reflecting Global Realities
In a significant development, Minister Goyal emphasized that both countries will collaborate on developing a new, more modern framework that accurately reflects current global economic realities. He highlighted that the earlier CEPA did not serve India's interests effectively, leading to imbalances that need urgent correction. The minister's remarks underscore a strategic shift in India's approach to bilateral trade agreements, focusing on fairness and mutual benefit.
Expanded Focus on Technology, Investments, and Business Linkages
Discussions between the two nations have also centered on expanding technology cooperation, boosting investments, and improving business linkages. India has proposed an innovative initiative to create a dedicated Korean enclave equipped with industrial and social infrastructure. This enclave is designed to attract Korean companies and professionals, fostering deeper economic integration and collaboration.
Major Investment Commitments Highlight Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Goyal further highlighted major investment commitments that signal a strengthening of bilateral economic relations. Notably, he mentioned a $7 billion steel project in Odisha, describing it as a key step forward. This project, along with other investments, is expected to enhance economic ties and create opportunities for both countries, aligning with the broader goal of a revised and more equitable trade agreement.
The move to renegotiate the CEPA reflects India's proactive stance in addressing trade imbalances and ensuring that international agreements are aligned with its economic priorities and growth objectives.
