Margao: The Cuncolim police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals for allegedly engaging in the illegal extraction of minerals from agricultural and other land parcels in Naquerim, Betul. This unauthorized activity is reported to have caused a financial loss of Rs 12 lakh to the state government.

Details of the Incident

According to police sources, the unknown accused persons carried out excavation and extraction of minerals from various survey numbers in Naquerim prior to July 2024. They operated without obtaining the necessary license or permit from the competent authority, thereby violating mining regulations. The extracted minerals were subsequently transported to an undisclosed location.

Legal Provisions Invoked

The accused are alleged to have committed theft of state government resources for personal gain. A case has been registered at the Cuncolim police station under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Rules 3, 38, and 73(1) of the Goa, Daman and Diu Minor Minerals Concession Rules. These legal provisions address illegal mining and the unauthorized extraction of minor minerals.

Investigation Underway

Further investigation into the matter is currently in progress. The police are working to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in this illicit operation. Authorities are also examining the extent of the damage caused to the land and the environment due to the illegal mining activities.
