Chennai Airport's Major Expansion on Track for December 2026 Launch
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has officially set December 2026 as the target completion date for Phase-2 of Chennai airport's international terminal, a critical infrastructure project that will dramatically enhance the facility's operational capabilities. This announcement comes amid ongoing construction challenges, including supply chain disruptions affecting steel imports due to escalating tensions in West Asia.
Construction Progress and Timeline Adjustments
Originally scheduled for completion in June 2026, the project timeline was extended due to raw material delays. Despite these hurdles, contractors have been directed to adhere strictly to the new December deadline. Significant progress has already been achieved, with the terminal extension's skeletal structure fully completed, representing over 40% of the total construction work.
Current construction activities include the installation of the truss structure for the terminal façade, which has necessitated temporary alterations to vehicle movement between departure terminals. Once the roof is erected, interior works will commence, marking a pivotal phase toward final completion.
Enhanced Capacity and Operational Features
Upon operationalization, the expanded terminal will enable Chennai airport to handle 35 million passengers annually, a substantial increase from current capacity. This boost is part of a broader strategy to improve Chennai's competitive standing against other major Indian airports like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Key operational upgrades include:
- Accommodation of 'Code F' aircraft, the largest wingspan category, compared to the current 'Code E' aircraft limitations.
- A flexible aerobridge design on the airside that can efficiently serve both smaller and larger aircraft.
- Enhanced passenger amenities, with check-in counters increasing from 120 to 192, additional baggage conveyors, and more immigration counters.
Project Context and Investment
This Phase-2 development follows the inauguration of Phase-1 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023. The total project cost for both phases amounts to Rs 2,467 crore, underscoring the significant investment in modernizing Chennai's aviation infrastructure. The expansion is poised to transform the airport into a major hub, supporting regional economic growth and improving passenger experience through state-of-the-art facilities.
As construction continues, authorities remain focused on mitigating supply chain issues to ensure the December 2026 deadline is met, paving the way for a new era in Chennai's air travel connectivity.
