Bhopal Airport's Major Overhaul to Ease Passenger Congestion with New Terminal Design
For frequent flyers using Bhopal's Raja Bhoj Airport, the chaotic scenes outside the departure gate have long been a source of frustration. Swarms of passengers jostling for space while waiting for cars or radio cabs, coupled with the harrowing experience of navigating luggage through vehicle-crammed roads, have defined the travel experience. However, a comprehensive redesign of the passenger terminal building promises to transform this ordeal into a seamless journey.
Two-Floor Terminal to Separate Arrivals and Departures
The centerpiece of this transformation is the introduction of two separate floors exclusively dedicated to arrivals and departures. This architectural shift aims to eliminate the bottlenecks caused by the current single-floor setup, which often leads to chaos during simultaneous flight landings. According to airport director Ramjee Awasthi, the renovation will expand passenger capacity, fix traffic snarls, boost visitor experience, and sharpen operational efficiency.
The revamped layout will feature the arrival hall on the ground floor and departures above, a design that aligns with Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) guidelines and peak hour passenger assessments. This separation is expected to streamline passenger flow, reduce congestion at exit points, and alleviate problems at arrival gates.
Doubling Peak-Hour Capacity and Enhancing Infrastructure
A key benefit of the upgrade is the significant increase in handling capacity. The existing terminal, originally designed to accommodate 1,200 passengers during peak hours, will see its capacity more than double to 2,600 passengers post-upgrade. This enhancement ensures readiness for future growth in air traffic, as the airport currently handles around 2.5 million passengers annually against a designed capacity of 3.5 million.
The project includes a comprehensive enhancement of passenger processing infrastructure:
- Check-in counters will increase from 14 to 32, boosting processing capability and reducing waiting times for travelers.
- Domestic security screening capacity will be strengthened, with the number of X-ray baggage inspection systems (X-BIS) expanding from two to eight, including integration of existing units into the upgraded layout.
- The security hold area (SHA) on the first floor is being expanded through the construction of an additional deck slab, substantially improving post-security seating capacity and comfort during peak operating periods.
Operational Efficiency and Future-Readiness
With arrivals relocated to the lower ground floor, the newly available space in the current terminal is being repurposed to further decongest the departure hall. This reconfiguration is expected to enhance the airport's capacity to accommodate growing passenger volumes while upholding safety standards. Officials confirm that the new facility will open soon, promising smoother passenger flow and reduced bottlenecks.
The ongoing reconfiguration of departure facilities marks a strategic move to modernize Bhopal's aviation infrastructure, addressing long-standing passenger grievances and positioning the airport for increased traffic in the coming years. As Awasthi noted, this initiative not only fixes immediate congestion issues but also sharpens overall operations for a more efficient travel experience.
