The Salem Municipal Corporation has embarked on a significant infrastructure improvement initiative, targeting damaged roads and aging sewer systems throughout all 60 wards of the city. Massive Financial Allocation for Infrastructure Repair
The corporation has allocated substantial financial resources for this ambitious undertaking. A total of Rs 8 crore has been designated specifically for road repairs, while an even larger sum of Rs 23 crore has been earmarked for sewer system rehabilitation. This combined investment of Rs 31 crore underscores the corporation's commitment to improving municipal infrastructure and addressing critical public service needs.
Critical Condition of Aging Sewer Systems
The sewer systems requiring immediate attention are in particularly dire condition. These underground networks, which serve the corporation's four zones, are more than 30 years old and have deteriorated significantly over time. The advanced age and poor state of these sewer lines have resulted in sewage stagnation at multiple locations throughout the city, creating both public health concerns and environmental challenges for local communities.
Systematic Identification and Approval Process
Corporation engineering department officials conducted thorough inspections of the damaged sewer infrastructure, identifying approximately 400 problematic locations across the four zones. This systematic assessment revealed an average of 100 specific sites requiring attention in each zone, highlighting the widespread nature of the infrastructure challenges.
Following this detailed evaluation, the engineering department prepared and submitted a comprehensive project report to the municipal administration department for technical approval. "After receiving the necessary departmental approval, we have commenced repair work on the identified sewer systems," confirmed a corporation official involved in the project.
Comprehensive Road Repair Initiative
Parallel to the sewer rehabilitation efforts, the corporation has launched an extensive road repair program covering all 60 wards. Engineering officials meticulously identified damaged road sections throughout the city, paving the way for systematic improvements to transportation infrastructure.
"Our engineering department personnel have completed assessments of damaged roads across all wards.
