In a significant step forward for Patna's landmark infrastructure project, the assembly of a massive Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has commenced, marking crucial progress on the ambitious 'Heritage Tunnel' designed to connect the Bihar Museum and the Patna Museum. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC), the nodal agency executing the project, has begun piecing together the 8-metre diameter machine imported from Singapore.
Engineering Marvel Takes Shape Underground
The assembly of the giant TBM is taking place at an opening shaft constructed at the Bihar Museum site. Officials from DMRC estimate that this intricate process will take approximately two months. Following its completion, the actual tunnel boring operation is slated to begin in March of this year.
Unlike standard metro tunnels, this 1.5-kilometre passage is conceived exclusively for pedestrians. "The TBM will be launched from the opening shaft at Bihar Museum and retrieved at a closing shaft at Patna Museum," explained officials. "This will allow visitors to walk comfortably and safely in a fully air-conditioned environment, completely avoiding the congested surface roads."
A Cultural Journey Beneath the City
More than just a connectivity corridor, the tunnel is envisioned as a unique underground art gallery celebrating Bihar's legacy. Its walls will be adorned with murals, Madhubani paintings, and artefacts that depict the state's rich traditions and artistic heritage.
The tunnel's path, running 15 to 20 metres below ground, will pass beneath key landmarks including the Patna Museum, Vidyapati Marg, the Planetarium crossing, Income Tax roundabout, and Patna Women's College. It will cross the deeper Patna Metro rail tunnel near Nehru Path with a safe vertical clearance of about 6.5 metres.
Focus on Visitor Experience and Safety
Designed with utmost convenience in mind, the heritage passage will feature multiple amenities. These include pedestrian walkways, stairs, two lifts at each end, and battery-operated golf carts for eco-friendly transport within the tunnel.
Modern safety systems such as fire safety mechanisms, CCTV surveillance, LED lighting, and an efficient drainage system will be integral. The entry and exit points will be housed in elegant G+1 structures with three-level basements, incorporating security checks. The project also promises seamless integration with the Patna Metro system through combined ticketing.
The construction activities for this iconic project began around December 2023, following the Bihar cabinet's approval in August 2023 with a sanctioned cost of Rs 542 crore. Officials are targeting completion by 2027, anticipating that it will significantly boost tourist footfall and offer a memorable, culturally immersive experience beneath the heart of the state capital.
