Women-Led Startups Thrive at Odisha's Toshali Swadeshi Mela
Women-led startups from across Odisha are achieving remarkable success at the ongoing Toshali Swadeshi Mela, an event that showcases artisans and weavers from over 20 states. The fair, which began on February 14 at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar and will conclude on February 26, has become a vibrant platform for female entrepreneurs to display and sell a diverse range of homegrown products.
Diverse Offerings from Local Entrepreneurs
The women entrepreneurs are presenting an array of innovative items, including moringa-based health supplements, millet snacks, and herbal cosmetics. Among the prominent exhibitors is Surekha Routray, who operates a production unit in Patia. She launched her startup two-and-a-half years ago, focusing on moringa-based products that leverage the plant's immunity-boosting properties.
"Moringa is very beneficial for lung health and overall immunity," Routray explained. "Since the pandemic, there has been a growing awareness about preventive healthcare, and we ensure all our products are prepared in a hygienic manner."
Her stall features over 25 varieties of food items, such as moringa tea, snacks, chawanprash, chips, and cookies, priced between Rs 80 and Rs 600 to cater to a broad customer base. Routray reported an encouraging response, with nearly 70% of her stock sold out and many repeat buyers specifically seeking her products.
Innovative Ventures Drawing Crowds
Another standout startup is run by two sisters, Rita and Shanta Baliarsingh, based in the Forest Park area of Bhubaneswar. Their brand has attracted large crowds with premium couverture, millet chocolates, and handcrafted truffles that incorporate traditional Odia flavors.
"Our goal is to infuse the authentic taste of Odisha into every chocolate we create," Rita stated. "The overwhelming response at Toshali motivates us to continue innovating and expanding our offerings."
The startup offers products ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 3,500, including customized corporate gifting hampers, and has seen significant footfall with many bulk and corporate orders.
Herbal Beauty Products Gain Traction
Ananya Das, founder of a herbal beauty and cosmetics brand at the mela, is promoting natural ingredient-based products. She noted a shift in consumer preferences from chemical-based cosmetics to herbal alternatives.
"Events like Toshali provide small entrepreneurs like us with a crucial platform to connect directly with customers," Das said. "The response has been phenomenal, and we are eager to participate in future editions."
Visitor Feedback and Event Impact
Abhisek Panigrahi, a visitor at the mela, commented on the positive impact of women entrepreneurs. "The presence of these women-led startups has added a new vibrancy to the fair," he observed. "With a blend of traditional crafts and innovative ventures, the Toshali Swadeshi Mela continues to serve as a launchpad for emerging enterprises in Odisha."
The event not only highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of women in the region but also underscores the growing demand for sustainable and health-focused products. As the mela progresses, it reinforces the importance of such platforms in fostering economic growth and community engagement.
