Mangaluru's Startup Ecosystem Accelerates with Coastal Startup Fest 2026
Mangaluru, a city in Dakshina Kannada, is witnessing a significant surge in its structured startup ecosystem, according to industry leaders. This momentum was highlighted at the inauguration of the two-day Nitte-MRPL 'Coastal Startup Fest- 2026', held at Fiza by Nexus Mall on Saturday.
Expert Insights on Startup Growth and Sustainability
B Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, vice-president (ISR and CRL) at Nitte (DU), emphasized that while innovation and entrepreneurship have long been ingrained in the region, the organized startup scene is now rapidly evolving. He pointed to India's remarkable startup growth, noting that the country had approximately 400 startups in 2016, a number that has now skyrocketed to over 120,000.
Bhandary cautioned, however, that sustaining a startup demands out-of-the-box thinking and original ideas. He asserted that Mangaluru possesses all the essential ingredients to nurture successful ventures and must actively develop as a prominent startup hub.
Call for Ecosystem Engagement and Problem-Solving
Chethan Dixit, vice-president of Karnataka Digital Economy Mission, urged aspiring entrepreneurs to integrate into a robust ecosystem. He stressed the importance of staying informed about government initiatives and support systems available to startups.
"It is crucial to focus on solving real-world problems," Dixit remarked, highlighting a shift in participation trends. He explained that previously, only 5–10% of applications for platforms like Elevate originated from clusters outside Bengaluru. "Today, it has grown to 30–40%, indicating the rise of innovation in emerging clusters," he added, underscoring the decentralization of startup activity in Karnataka.
