Pune Metro's Big 2026 Push: Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Line 3 Set for March Launch
Pune Metro Line 3 (Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar) Launch by March 2026

Pune's public transport network is poised for a significant transformation in 2026, with the long-awaited inauguration of a key metro line and plans for extensive new routes taking shape. The city, which has grappled with rising private vehicles due to insufficient public transit, is set to receive a major boost with the operationalization of Metro Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar.

Deadline Set for Crucial IT Corridor Link

The spotlight is firmly on the 23.3-kilometre elevated Line 3, which is now expected to be inaugurated by March 31, 2026. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently emphasized the need to complete work on time, directing the implementing agency, Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (PITCMRL), to adhere to the deadline. Authorities at the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have stated that no further extensions will be granted to the agency, which has received multiple deadlines in the past.

This line is keenly anticipated as it will directly connect the city with the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi, a major IT hub plagued by severe traffic congestion for years. The new line will integrate with the currently operational Line 1 (PCMC to Swargate) and Line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi) via a skywalk at the Civil Court station, creating a more cohesive network. However, officials indicate that pending work might lead to a phased opening of all stations on Line 3.

Momentum Builds on Route Extensions

While Line 3 takes centre stage, work is progressing on several extensions to the existing network. The Union Government has approved the extension of both operational lines and given the green light for a new Line 4 from Khadakwasla to Kharadi.

On the ground, construction of the 4.5 km elevated extension from PCMC to Nigdi (Line 1) is gaining pace. Work began in March 2024, and significant progress has been made on foundations, piers, and segment casting. The civil work is targeted for completion by September 2026, though operational services will take additional time. In contrast, the underground extension from Swargate to Katraj on the same line is yet to commence due to technical hurdles.

Furthermore, extension works on Line 2—from Ramwadi to Wagholi and from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk—are slated to begin soon as the tendering process nears completion.

Blueprint for the Future: New Routes on the Drawing Board

Looking beyond the immediate projects, the Pune Metro is planning a substantial expansion of its network. Detailed project reports (DPRs) are likely to be prepared for several new proposed corridors. These potential future routes aim to widen the metro's reach across the city and its outskirts.

The new routes under consideration include:

  • Wakad to Katraj via the Mumbai-Bengaluru Bypass
  • Wakad to Chakan
  • Kharadi to Pune Airport
  • Shivajinagar to Kondhwa
  • Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor
  • Hadapsar to Saswad Road railway

The activation of Line 3 is expected to be a game-changer, not just for IT professionals in Hinjewadi but for the entire network. It is projected to significantly increase footfall on the existing Lines 1 and 2, providing the much-needed impetus to Pune's metro ridership figures. This comprehensive push represents a critical step towards addressing the city's chronic traffic woes and building a sustainable urban transport ecosystem.
