Pune Metro Enhances Connectivity with New Feeder Autorickshaw Service
In a significant boost to urban mobility, Pune Metro has officially launched feeder autorickshaw services at the SNDT–Nal Stop Metro station. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the autorickshaw union Baghtoy Rickshawala and Maha Metro, aims to provide seamless last-mile connectivity for commuters in the bustling Kothrud area.
Four Key Routes Identified for Initial Phase
The first phase of this service rollout includes four distinct routes designed to cover various strategic locations. These routes encompass Warje, DP Road–Rajaram Bridge, and parts of Karvenagar, ensuring comprehensive coverage for residents and daily travelers. Commuters will benefit from affordable fares, with charges set at Rs 20 or Rs 30 per seat per ride, depending on the distance traveled.
Mobile App Integration for Easy Booking
To streamline the user experience, a dedicated mobile-based application has been introduced, allowing passengers to book rides conveniently. Deepak Mohite, a Metro passenger, shared his positive experience after using the app to travel from the station to Rajaram Bridge. He noted that the app clearly displays the route and stops, and generates a ride code to share with the auto driver before payment, enhancing transparency and efficiency.
Government Support and Future Expansion Plans
State cabinet minister and Kothrud MLA Chandrakant Patil, who inaugurated the service alongside mayor Manjusha Nagpure, emphasized the initiative's role in easing commuter access to Metro stations. He urged authorities to extend similar feeder services to other Metro stations across the city. Patil highlighted the success of the Rickshamitra prepaid auto services at Pune railway station and expressed optimism for a similar response here.
Patil further outlined the government's commitment to strengthening public transport, mentioning plans to introduce environment-friendly e-buses in Pune and collaborate with PMPML for smaller feeder buses at Metro stations. He noted that the state and central governments are actively expanding the Metro network in key cities, including Pune, as part of broader urban development efforts.
Union-Led Initiative with Dedicated Infrastructure
Keshav Kshirsagar, head of Baghtoy Rickshawala, detailed the union's proactive role in setting up a dedicated halt at the station, complete with informational boards for commuters. He mentioned ongoing improvements and plans to establish dedicated halts at pickup points to facilitate easier access to the station. Autorickshaw driver Gajanan Kad reported a promising initial response, with many bookings on the launch day, and anticipates increased usage in the coming days.
Addressing Commuter Concerns and Ensuring Smooth Operations
Regular Metro commuters have long voiced concerns over the lack of feeder services, particularly at high-footfall stations. Meena Kale, a commuter at SNDT–Nal Stop, welcomed the new initiative but stressed the need for dedicated auto areas to prevent traffic disruptions and ensure smooth functioning. This feedback underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and adjustments to optimize the service.
