Noida's Yamuna Pushta Road Set for Major Rs 30-Crore Upgrade to Combat Traffic Woes
The Yamuna Pushta Road in Noida, a critical 11.5-kilometer stretch from Kalindi Kunj to Sector 135, is poised for a significant transformation with a Rs 30-crore revamp. This initiative comes as the Noida Authority addresses long-standing issues of potholes and rough surfaces that have plagued the route, while simultaneously drafting estimates for an additional 15-kilometer upgrade extending to Sector 150.
Key Backup Route to Alleviate Expressway Congestion
This four-lane road serves as a vital alternative to the heavily congested Noida Expressway, which often experiences slow-moving traffic and extended commute times during peak hours. With approvals secured from the irrigation department, authorities are gearing up to commence resurfacing of damaged sections in the coming weeks. The goal is to enhance traffic flow along this embankment road, which runs parallel to the expressway and offers a viable option for local and intra-city travel.
Addressing Missing Links and Sector Road Gaps
In addition to the revamp, work will focus on plugging missing links along the 45-meter-wide sector roads adjacent to the expressway. Specifically, three gaps measuring 74 meters, 75 meters, and 81.5 meters between Sectors 163 and 167 have disrupted continuous movement. These breaks force residents from multiple sectors, including 150, 151, 152, 153, 155, 163, 167, 135, and 168, to rely on the expressway even for short trips. Officials estimate that approximately 2.5 acres of land will be required to connect these segments, enabling the sector roads to function as effective diversion corridors during peak traffic, emergencies, or maintenance activities on the main carriageway.
Stalled Plans for Elevated Corridors and Larger Projects
Despite these efforts, broader infrastructure plans remain in limbo. A proposal for an elevated Kalindi Kunj-Sector 150 corridor has stalled, and earlier ambitions to develop a parallel riverside expressway from Okhla Barrage to Yamuna Expressway at Pari Chowk have faced setbacks. Discussions to declare the stretch a national highway, which would involve the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), did not progress due to the irrigation department withholding a no-objection certificate. Concerns were raised about potential impacts on the embankment's structural integrity and drainage channels.
A subsequent proposal for an elevated embankment expressway received in-principle approval from the Authority's board, with the state government recommending execution by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority through shared funding. However, regulatory clearances are still pending, leaving the larger parallel expressway plan on hold.
Interim Focus on Sector Road Functionality
As an interim measure, the Noida Authority is prioritizing the full operationalization of the 45-meter-wide sector roads on both sides of the expressway. This strategy aims to provide relief from the 25-kilometer Noida Expressway, an arterial link between Delhi and Greater Noida that handles traffic from multiple entry points such as the DND Flyway, Chilla border, and Kalindi Kunj. During office hours, spillover traffic from adjoining sectors exacerbates congestion, highlighting the urgent need for alternative routes like the upgraded Yamuna Pushta Road.
This comprehensive approach underscores Noida's commitment to improving urban mobility and infrastructure, addressing immediate traffic challenges while navigating regulatory hurdles for future expansions.
