Nashik Municipal Corporation Launches Major Highway Infrastructure Project
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken a significant step toward improving urban connectivity by inviting bids for a major highway upgrade project. The civic body has floated tenders worth Rs 203 crore for comprehensive work on a crucial 6.4-kilometer stretch of the Nashik-Pune highway.
Project Scope and Timeline
The ambitious infrastructure initiative focuses on the segment between Dwarka Circle and Datta Mandir in Nashik Road. This includes not only the main highway but also the service road running parallel to the existing flyover. According to official statements, the selected contractor will have exactly one year from the issuance of the work order to complete all aspects of the project.
The comprehensive work involves two major components:
- Widening the corridor from its current six lanes to ten lanes
- Complete asphalting of the entire 6.4-kilometer stretch
Bidding Process and Contractor Selection
NMC officials have established a clear timeline for the bidding process. Prospective contractors can submit their bids until March 25, with the formal opening scheduled for the following day. To ensure clarity and address potential questions, the civic body has also organized a pre-bid meeting for interested parties on March 25.
"We have floated bids for the widening and asphalting of the 6.4km stretch from six lanes to ten at Rs 203 crore," confirmed an NMC official. "The selected contractor will have one year to finish the work."
Evolution of the Project Plan
The current project represents a refined approach following technical consultations. Initially, NMC had proposed white-topping for the entire corridor and sought support from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the upgrade. After detailed discussions between senior officials of both agencies, NHAI recommended switching to asphalting as the preferred method.
Following this technical guidance, the civic body submitted a revised proposal that combined the widening work with asphalt surfacing, creating the comprehensive project now being tendered.
Addressing Critical Traffic Congestion
The Dwarka-Nashik Road segment targeted for improvement is among the busiest and most congested corridors in Nashik city. This critical artery serves multiple traffic streams including vehicles bound for Pune, Shirdi, and Sinnar's industrial belt. Dense commercial activity along the route further compounds traffic slowdowns, making expansion a long-pending demand from daily commuters and local businesses alike.
Expected Benefits and Kumbh Mela Preparation
Once completed, the widened and asphalted corridor is projected to accommodate nearly double the current traffic volume. This substantial increase in capacity should significantly ease daily congestion and resolve persistent bottlenecks that have plagued the route for years.
The timing of this infrastructure upgrade is particularly strategic, as Nashik prepares for next year's Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The civic body is likely to fast-track project execution to ensure the improved corridor is operational well before the massive religious gathering, which typically attracts millions of pilgrims and requires enhanced transportation infrastructure.
