NHAI Studies 900-Metre Extension for Manesar Flyover to Ease NH-8 Congestion
NHAI Studies 900-Metre Extension for Manesar Flyover

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a crucial feasibility study to explore extending the proposed Manesar flyover on the busy Delhi-Jaipur highway. The aim is to add an extra 900 metres to the flyover's length to alleviate severe and frequent traffic bottlenecks on a problematic stretch near the Manesar hill area.

Study to Assess Critical Bottleneck Stretch

The detailed study, which is expected to be finalized by January, will specifically evaluate the possibility of stretching the flyover from the NSG campus up to Nainwal Road. This particular segment is notorious for traffic snarls, especially when heavy vehicles break down or lanes are obstructed. An NHAI official stated that the evaluation will comprehensively analyse traffic load, terrain constraints, future connectivity needs, and paramount safety concerns, given the complete absence of service roads in this section.

"The feasibility study will assess financial implications, design criteria and engineering aspects, as the proposed extension passes through elevated and undulating terrain with hilly topography. We are also factoring in future traffic demand and safety aspects, given the absence of service roads in this section," explained the official.

Addressing Chronic Congestion on a Vital Corridor

This move follows a directive from Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh in August, who urged the NHAI to look into extending the flyover up to the hill section to address the chronic congestion that causes long traffic tailbacks. Currently, even minor incidents like stalled trucks can lead to massive traffic pile-ups stretching back towards Manesar, as there are no alternative service roads for diversion.

NH-8 is one of the region's busiest corridors, with the Manesar section alone handling close to 1 lakh passenger car units (PCUs) daily. It is a critical artery for industrial traffic, commercial vehicles, and thousands of daily commuters, who have endured severe logjams at Bilaspur and Manesar for years, particularly during peak hours.

Project Details and Coordination with Local Plans

Earlier this year, NHAI awarded contracts for two flyovers—at Manesar and Bilaspur Chowk—on NH-8. While construction at Bilaspur Chowk has begun with piling work underway, the start of the Manesar flyover is contingent on the operationalization of the Gurgaon–Pataudi–Rewari highway for traffic diversion during construction.

As per the currently approved design, the Manesar flyover is planned as a 1.2-km-long, six-lane elevated structure with three-lane service roads on each side. Any extension would necessitate significant design modifications due to elevation changes and the challenging hilly terrain. The two flyovers have a combined budget of Rs 84 crore and are targeted for completion by 2027.

Officials added that coordination with local civic authorities is also part of the study to align with future connectivity plans, especially the planned development of Nainwal Road. The final scope of the Manesar flyover project will be determined solely by the findings of this ongoing feasibility study, which will decide if the 900-metre extension is technically and financially viable.
