Nashik Municipal Corporation Extends Bidding Deadline for Major Highway Widening Project
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has officially announced a 15-day extension to the bidding deadline for the crucial development and widening of a 6.3-kilometer segment of the Nashik-Pune highway. This decision follows an underwhelming response from contractors for this significant infrastructure initiative.
Project Details and Revised Timeline
Originally floated on March 17 with a tender value of Rs 203 crore, the project encompasses the vital route stretching from Dwarka to Datta Mandir. The extension grants potential bidders additional time to prepare and submit comprehensive proposals for this transformative road upgrade.
The civic body's plan involves asphalting the main highway alongside the parallel service roads adjacent to the Nashik Road flyover. This strategic move aims to substantially improve traffic flow and enhance road quality along one of Nashik's most congested corridors.
Urgent Infrastructure Upgrade Ahead of Kumbh Mela
The project carries particular urgency as it forms an integral component of the city's preparations for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled next year. The targeted completion window is within one year from the issuance of the work order, with the highway segment being expanded from the current six lanes to a more capacious ten lanes.
An NMC official, speaking to TOI, emphasized the time-sensitive nature of this development. "The target is to complete the widening by March 2027, a crucial deadline since the Kumbh Mela preparations across Nashik have entered a time-sensitive phase," the official stated.
Evolution of the Project Planning
The project's journey to this point has involved significant planning revisions. Initially, the NMC approached the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to develop the 6.4 km stretch and sought financial backing. The civic body's original proposal featured white-topping for the entire corridor, accompanied by a detailed plan.
However, during high-level discussions between officials of both agencies, NHAI recommended opting for asphalting instead of white topping. Following this expert advice, NMC officials meticulously prepared a revised proposal focusing on road widening to ten lanes with asphalting. After securing NHAI's consent, the civic body initiated the tender process that has now been extended.
Strategic Importance of the Dwarka–Nashik Road Corridor
The Dwarka–Nashik Road corridor represents one of Nashik city's busiest transportation arteries, handling substantial intercity and regional traffic volumes. This critical route serves multiple destinations:
- Vehicles traveling toward Pune
- Traffic heading to Shirdi
- Transport accessing the Sinnar industrial belt
- Significant local vehicular movement
The concentration of commercial establishments along this stretch further exacerbates congestion issues, making the widening project both essential and long overdue for Nashik's growing transportation needs.
The NMC official confirmed that the civic body intends to expedite the tendering process once the extended deadline concludes, aiming to issue the work order to the qualified firm at the earliest possible opportunity.
