Nagpur's Itwari Kirana Merchants Association Launches Groundbreaking for New Marketplace
In a significant development for Nagpur's commercial landscape, the long-awaited new marketplace of the Nagpur Itwari Kirana Merchants Association has finally moved from planning to reality. The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Mouja Chikhli (Dev) on the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa, marking the start of a transformative project set to redefine the city's grocery trade.
Project Details and Modern Amenities
The ambitious 16-acre project is estimated to cost between Rs 250 crore and Rs 300 crore, with construction targeted for completion within two years. Once finished, it will relocate grocery traders currently operating from the narrow, congested lanes of the Itwari and Maskasath areas to a spacious, modern facility. A total of 665 traders will benefit, each allotted a minimum of 1,000 square feet of operational space.
The new marketplace is designed with state-of-the-art amenities to address long-standing issues. Key features include:
- Ample parking facilities to ease traffic congestion
- Wide internal roads for improved accessibility
- Round-the-clock security for enhanced safety
- A solar power system to promote sustainability
- Rainwater harvesting and a sewage treatment plant for environmental responsibility
Addressing Challenges and Boosting Business
Speaking at the ceremony, association president Pramod Sedani highlighted the major difficulties faced by both traders and customers in the old market area. "The lack of parking and limited operational space has been a persistent problem," he said. "This new market will not only solve these issues but is poised to emerge as a major commercial hub of Central India. Its proximity to the Kalamna market yard offers traders a great opportunity for business growth."

The event saw the presence of several association office-bearers, including secretary Pankaj Chhabariya, Chikhli Committee convener Harish Krishnani, former president Govind Mitra, and members such as Mrityukumar Panchmatiya, Sanjay Suchak, Rajendraprasad Vaidya, Harshitmal Katariya, Prakashchand Ghotal, and Shiv Pratap Singh.
