Mumbai Metro Achieves Major Milestone, Surpasses 100km Operational Network
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has reached a significant infrastructure milestone, with its operational metro network now exceeding 100 kilometers in length. This achievement positions Mumbai as India's second-largest metro system, surpassing Bengaluru and trailing only the extensive Delhi-NCR network. The expansion marks a transformative phase in the city's public transportation landscape, offering enhanced connectivity to millions of residents.
Key Expansions Driving Network Growth
Several recent inaugurations have contributed to this milestone. The 4.4-kilometer Metro Line 9 stretch from Dahisar to Kashigaon represents the first metro corridor in Thane district, effectively linking the Mira-Bhayander area to the broader metro network. Simultaneously, the opening of Metro Line 2B from Mandale to Diamond Garden has introduced metro connectivity to Mumbai's eastern suburbs for the very first time, addressing long-standing transportation gaps in these regions.
Comparative Analysis with Other Indian Cities
When compared to other major Indian metro systems, Mumbai's achievement is particularly noteworthy. The Delhi-NCR metro network remains the largest in the country with approximately 416 kilometers of track and 303 stations. Kolkata's metro system currently spans 74 kilometers, while Bengaluru's network has now been overtaken by Mumbai's expanded infrastructure. Including the 10-kilometer Navi Mumbai Metro corridor, the total operational metro length within MMR has now surpassed 101 kilometers.
Operational Restructuring and Future Plans
The metro expansion has necessitated some operational changes to optimize service efficiency. Metro Line 7 has been integrated with Line 9 to provide direct service from Gundavali to Dahisar and Kashigaon, while Metro Line 2A now operates as a standalone route between Andheri West and Dahisar East. Importantly, transfers at Dahisar station will remain within the paid concourse area, ensuring passenger convenience.
Looking ahead, the future appears even more promising for Mumbai's metro network. Several ongoing projects in the region are already 80-96% complete, indicating rapid network growth in the coming years. The ambitious Metro 9 project, valued at Rs 6,500 crore, is being executed in two phases, with the second 4.3-kilometer stretch from Sai Baba Nagar to Subhash Chandra Bose Nagar planned for later this year.
Long-Term Vision and Upcoming Extensions
The long-term vision for Mumbai's metro system is truly expansive. Once the full planned network of 337 kilometers becomes operational, MMR is expected to host one of the world's longest metro systems. Immediate future expansions include the next sections of Metro Line 2B, featuring a 6-kilometer stretch from D N Nagar to Saraswati Colony and an 11-kilometer extension from Saraswati Colony to Chembur. These segments are anticipated to be operational by 2027-28, significantly strengthening connectivity across eastern Mumbai.
