Mangaluru to Develop 22-Km Coastal Road with Protective Wall to Boost Tourism
Mangaluru Plans 22-Km Coastal Road to Enhance Tourism and Prevent Erosion

Mangaluru Announces Major Coastal Road Development Project

In a significant move to enhance coastal connectivity and tourism, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) administrator and Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV has announced plans to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for developing a 22-kilometer coastal road along the city's shoreline. This announcement was made during the presentation of the MCC's 2026-27 budget on Thursday, marking a crucial step in the government's broader initiative to improve seashore connectivity from Karwar to Talapady.

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges and Boosting Tourism

The coastal road project aims to address the limited opportunities for expanding the existing four-lane national highway between Talapady and Sasihitlu. Local representatives have previously discussed developing a 40-kilometer coastal road between these two points, and the MCC will now prepare the DPR for the road within its jurisdictional limits. "While developing the coastal road, a protective wall needs to be constructed to prevent sea erosion. Once the road is completed, the panoramic views of the sea and rivers will further boost coastal tourism," stated Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV.

The DPR will be prepared in collaboration with key departments, including ports, public works department (PWD), and national highways. Preliminary discussions have already taken place at the government level, and a clearer picture of the project is expected to emerge in the coming days, signaling a coordinated effort to move forward with this ambitious infrastructure plan.

Additional Budget Allocations for City Development

Beyond the coastal road, the MCC's 2026-27 budget includes several other noteworthy allocations aimed at improving city infrastructure and cultural preservation:

  • High-Resolution CCTV Cameras: To enhance cleanliness, traffic management, and safety, the MCC plans to install high-resolution CCTV cameras at identified locations, with a budget allocation of Rs 2 crore reserved for this purpose.
  • Cultural Promotion: A budget of Rs 50 lakh has been earmarked to promote Tulu culture and art forms, including drama, Yakshagana, Bhootaradhane, and other traditional arts of Tulu Nadu. Specifically, Rs 10 lakh is allocated for Yakshagana support, and Rs 9 lakh for kambala.
  • 'Sakhi' Toilets: To improve public amenities, 'Sakhi' toilets will be developed near bus stands, markets, and other public areas, with Rs 10 crore allocated for this initiative.
  • Innovation Fund: An innovation fund of Rs 50 lakh has been established to address odours emanating from the solid waste management unit at Pachanady. This fund will support institutions and startups that develop innovative solutions to this environmental issue.

These comprehensive measures reflect the MCC's commitment to holistic urban development, combining infrastructure upgrades with cultural and environmental initiatives to enhance the quality of life in Mangaluru.
