After nearly 26 years of grappling with inadequate and problematic parking, Bengaluru's historic KR Market has undergone a significant modernization of its underground facility. This high-tech revamp, accommodating 200 cars and 400 two-wheelers, is strategically designed to boost footfall, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the overall visitor experience by blending cultural heritage with contemporary infrastructure.
From Neglected Space to High-Tech Hub
For years, the underground parking at KR Market was notorious for its foul odors and frequent use for unlawful activities, severely impacting both vendors and customers. The lack of proper parking had led to a noticeable decline in customer visits, as vehicles were often parked haphazardly on roadsides, creating chaos and deterring shoppers.
The transformation involved extensive structural repairs, including the removal of 210 abandoned vehicles and clearing 260 tractor-loads of waste. Open holes that caused waterlogging were sealed, and the rainwater drainage system was completely redesigned to prevent flooding, ensuring a functional and safe environment.
Cultural Aesthetics Meet Modern Design
The newly revamped parking lot is not just functional but also visually appealing, featuring floral decor, wall paintings depicting the market's rich history, a statue, fully lit surroundings, and distinctive elephant-trunk pillars. A private operator was awarded a 10-year contract to manage the facility, investing approximately Rs 6 crore in the modernization.
