After years of delays, the much-anticipated skywalk at Kolkata's busy Ruby crossing might finally become a reality this year. A significant breakthrough has emerged regarding the project's funding, offering new hope for its completion.
New Funding Proposal Revives Stalled Project
In a recent development, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma indicated that Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) could be approached to finance the construction. This crucial update was noted during a meeting of the district road safety committee. The official minutes, reviewed by sources, state that Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Shrikant Jagannathrao Yeilwad formally requested the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to initiate the construction work.
The minutes clearly record the Commissioner's statement: "CP stated RVNL will bear the cost." This potential commitment from RVNL, the entity responsible for building the city's Metro rail infrastructure, is seen as the key to unlocking the long-stalled project.
Design and Connectivity of the Proposed Skywalk
The planned aerial pathway is designed to be an engineering feat, situated approximately 18 feet above the ground. It will be constructed strategically beneath the existing Metro viaduct. The skywalk will feature five entry and exit points, ensuring easy access for pedestrians from multiple directions.
Its most significant feature will be a direct link to the Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro station. This integration is expected to provide seamless connectivity, allowing Metro passengers and other pedestrians to safely cross the notoriously congested Eastern Metropolitan Bypass area.
Addressing Long-Standing Commuter Woes
The Ruby crossing is a critical and perpetually crowded intersection in the city. The absence of a safe pedestrian crossing has been a major concern for commuters and residents for years. The construction of this skywalk aims to directly address these safety and convenience issues.
