ED Intensifies Money Laundering Probe Against Kolkata's Merlin Group with Fresh Raids
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday escalated its ongoing money laundering investigation into Kolkata-based real estate firm Merlin Group and its associated entities by conducting fresh searches at multiple locations. Officials confirmed to news agency PTI that the action targeted around 4–5 premises across Kolkata and North 24 Parganas district under the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Follow-Up to Previous Enforcement Actions
This latest enforcement operation serves as a direct follow-up to the extensive raids conducted on April 8 at properties linked to Merlin Projects Limited and its prominent promoters, Sushil Mohta and Saket Mohta. The agency's renewed focus indicates a deepening of the probe into complex financial transactions and alleged irregularities within the real estate conglomerate's operations.
Allegations of Financial Irregularities and Political Links
According to ED sources familiar with the investigation, the probe is meticulously examining suspected financial connections between the Merlin Group and certain politicians as well as officials within the West Bengal government. The agency has raised serious concerns about the company's business practices, specifically alleging that the promoters and the organization fabricated a "false" chain of property titles using forged documentation.
These alleged activities have led to accusations of systematic land grabbing, with the ED asserting that the accused parties then commercially exploited these properties by launching large-scale real estate developments. The investigation suggests that the accused projected themselves as lawful property owners through these forged documents, thereby inducing substantial public investments into their various projects.
Company's Defense and Ongoing Cooperation
In response to these serious allegations, the Merlin Group has maintained its position of full cooperation with the investigating authorities. Company representatives have consistently defended their business practices, asserting that all transactions have been conducted with complete transparency and adherence to legal frameworks.
The company specifically addressed the Merlin Niyasa project, which has come under particular scrutiny, stating that this development was executed under a valid agreement and carried out in a completely lawful and transparent manner. Despite these assertions, the ED's continued investigative actions suggest persistent concerns about the financial integrity of the company's operations.
Political Context and Broader Implications
The timing of these enforcement actions carries significant political weight, with West Bengal scheduled to conduct crucial electoral processes in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The investigation's focus on alleged connections between the real estate group and political figures adds a layer of complexity to an already sensitive political landscape in the state.
The ED's persistent pursuit of this case demonstrates the agency's commitment to unraveling complex financial networks and enforcing anti-money laundering regulations within the real estate sector. As the investigation progresses, further developments are expected to shed light on the intricate financial relationships and business practices under examination.
