Delhi Development Authority to Build World-Class Multi-Sports Complex in Narela

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to commence work on developing a world-class multi-sports complex in Narela, marking a significant boost to the capital's sporting infrastructure. The process of finalising an agency for this ambitious project is expected to be completed this week, with sources indicating that the entire development may be finished within three years.

Comprehensive Facilities and Amenities

This extensive project will not only feature a multi-sports stadium with both indoor and outdoor facilities but will also include a hospital and a hotel. The hospital, which will be accessible to local residents, adds a valuable healthcare component to the complex. The stadium itself is designed to meet Olympic standards, with arenas capable of hosting international sporting events, positioning Delhi as a potential hub for major competitions.

Strategic Connectivity and Planning

Highlighting the strategic advantages of the location, a DDA official emphasised the excellent connectivity. Athletes and visitors will be able to reach the venue easily from the airport due to smooth access via the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), which helps avoid traffic congestion. Furthermore, the metro route in the area has been realigned, with two stations conveniently located within the sports city, enhancing public transport access.

Project Background and Vision

The project was conceptualised six months ago by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and received approval last month, with the tendering process being fast-tracked to expedite development. The official noted that Delhi currently lacks comprehensive sporting infrastructure with ancillary facilities, making this project a much-needed addition. "Besides athletes participating in tournaments and events, residents of nearby neighbourhoods will also benefit from the proposed sports complex," the official stated, underscoring its community-oriented approach.

Detailed Indoor and Outdoor Facilities

The indoor facilities will be spread across multiple floors, offering a wide range of amenities:

  • Ground Floor: Reception area, gymnasium, audio-visual room, administration office, multipurpose hall, three indoor badminton courts, and an aerobics exercise room.
  • First Floor: Another multipurpose hall, two squash courts, wrestling area, boxing hall, table tennis hall, an open food court, terraces, and toilets with changing rooms.

Outdoor facilities will be equally impressive, including:

  • Cricket field with practice nets and a jogging track.
  • Football field, three tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts.
  • Two wrestling courts, three pickleball courts, and a kabaddi court.
  • Children's play area, swimming pool, and toilet blocks.

Enhanced Infrastructure and Appeal

To ensure smooth movement within the sports city, a dedicated internal transportation network will be developed for athletes and visitors. Additionally, the project will feature landscaping, parks, parking facilities, food courts, and eateries, all designed to enhance the overall appeal and functionality of the complex. This holistic approach aims to create not just a sports venue, but a vibrant community space that caters to diverse needs.
