Delhi Development Authority Greenlights Major Infrastructure Boost Across Capital
In a significant move to enhance urban infrastructure and recreational facilities, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved a series of ambitious projects across multiple neighborhoods in the national capital. The decisions received formal approval from Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena during a comprehensive review meeting held on Wednesday.
Strategic Projects Targeting Key Delhi Localities
The development authority has identified four strategic locations for substantial infrastructure upgrades: west Delhi's Kirti Nagar and Vikaspuri, east Delhi's Mayur Vihar, and northwest Delhi's Rohini. Each area will receive specialized facilities designed to address local needs while boosting economic activity and community amenities.
Officials confirmed that specific land parcels have already been identified and cleared of encroachments for these initiatives. Extensive stakeholder consultations have been conducted to assess both feasibility and community demand for the proposed facilities.
Warehouse Complex to Revolutionize Kirti Nagar Furniture Market
Kirti Nagar, widely recognized as Asia's largest furniture and hardware market, has long suffered from acute storage shortages. This deficiency forced traders to store merchandise on roadsides, resulting in persistent traffic congestion and unauthorized encroachments.
"To address this critical issue, we have decided to utilize a substantial DDA plot to develop a comprehensive warehouse complex on a licence fee basis," explained a senior DDA official. "The facility will be operated by a concessionaire who will rent storage space to local traders, dramatically improving logistics in the area."
The warehouse project spans an impressive 49,457 square meters in Kirti Nagar and is strategically located near the Raja Garden area, allowing it to serve both retail traders and nearby manufacturing units. The land will be licensed for 33 years, with the licensee responsible for financing, development, operation, and maintenance as per the licence agreement.
Additional Storage Infrastructure in Rohini
Complementing the Kirti Nagar initiative, DDA is already developing a mega warehouse complex in Rohini's Sector 36, covering 23.2 acres. This project comprises two plots: Plot A measuring 10.43 acres and Plot B spanning 12.73 acres, both to be offered under similar 33-year licence arrangements.
"The licence fee model ensures DDA retains land ownership while generating consistent annual revenue," the official emphasized. "These storage facilities will significantly reduce traders' dependence on warehouses in NCR towns, cutting transportation costs and enabling more efficient inventory management."
Recreational and Tourism Enhancements Across Delhi
The approved projects extend beyond commercial infrastructure to include significant recreational developments:
- Delhi Eye: Mayur Vihar will receive a 15,552 square meter observation wheel project inspired by London's iconic attraction, surrounded by planned residential communities.
- Vikaspuri Recreational Hub: A 2,000 square meter plot adjacent to the recently inaugurated Aarambh Pustakalaya will be developed into a community recreational club.
- Rohini Amusement Park: Sector 29 will feature a sprawling 25.50-hectare amusement park, creating a major entertainment destination for northwest Delhi residents.
"These recreational spaces will provide families with quality leisure opportunities and diverse entertainment options," noted a DDA representative. "We anticipate substantial footfall at both the Delhi Eye and amusement park locations given their proximity to residential areas."
Streamlined Implementation Under Existing Regulations
DDA officials revealed that the decision to develop these parcels followed overwhelming interest from industry players eager to participate under the licence fee model. Since all proposed developments align with permissible uses under the Master Plan of Delhi-2021, no land use changes will be required.
"Following contract awards, licensees can expedite development without regulatory hurdles," officials confirmed. "After reviewing the comprehensive presentation, Lieutenant Governor Saxena directed officials to immediately commence groundwork related to tendering and associated processes."
This multi-faceted infrastructure initiative represents one of DDA's most comprehensive neighborhood development programs in recent years, addressing both economic necessities and quality-of-life enhancements for Delhi residents across multiple districts.
