Ukkadam Bus Stand Redevelopment 50% Complete, Full Launch by Feb 2026
Coimbatore's Ukkadam Bus Stand redevelopment on track for 2026

The ambitious redevelopment of Coimbatore's Ukkadam Bus Stand has crossed a significant milestone, with half of the work now finished. The Coimbatore City Corporation has announced a clear roadmap to complete the entire project by February 2026, bringing a major upgrade to the city's public transport infrastructure.

Project Progress and Official Timeline

City Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran confirmed that the on-site construction work is complete. The focus has now shifted to the remaining fabrication work, which involves installing steel shelters for the bus terminals. "The remaining fabrication work for shelters, made of steel, will be completed soon. We have targeted to complete the entire project by February," stated Prabakaran. The redevelopment, a ₹21.55-crore initiative, began its construction phase in August 2025.

Design and Dual-Terminal Structure

The project is not a simple renovation but a comprehensive rebuild featuring two distinct terminals. This strategic design aims to decongest the area and improve traffic flow. One terminal is being constructed at the down ramp at the Selvapuram-Perur bypass road near Periyakulam lake. The other is rising at the existing bus stand site where the old structure once stood. The original Ukkadam Bus Stand was demolished following the construction of the Ukkadam flyover back in 2018.

Simultaneous Work to Meet Deadline

A senior corporation official explained that work on both terminals is progressing at the same time to ensure the deadline is met efficiently. "Work on both terminals are being carried out simultaneously. The construction work of the first terminal will be completed by January-end," the official said. He further added that once the first terminal is done, the entire manpower will be deployed to finish the second terminal by February, expressing confidence that meeting the deadline will not be a challenge.

The second terminal is specifically designed to handle mofussil (non-metro) bus services. It will feature 28 bus bays to cater to routes heading to destinations such as Palakkad, Udumalaipettai, and Palladam. This organized segregation between local and outstation services is expected to significantly reduce chaos and streamline operations for commuters and bus operators alike.

The completion of this project will mark the end of a long wait for a modern bus terminus in the area, replacing the temporary arrangements made after the demolition. It promises enhanced passenger amenities, better traffic management, and a more organized hub for interstate and intrastate bus travel in Coimbatore.
