In a significant boost to urban liveability, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has greenlit a major project to develop a new public park in the city's Maitree Vihar locality. The initiative, named Hatiasuni Park, is a direct response to long-standing demands from residents for accessible recreational space.
A ₹1.36 Crore Oasis Amid Concrete
The ambitious project carries a budget of ₹1.36 crore and is a cornerstone of the city's strategy to create sustainable green zones. It aims to transform a currently vacant land parcel spanning approximately 2 acres into a vibrant, lush community hub. This development is part of a broader push to ensure that rapid urbanisation in Bhubaneswar is balanced with essential green lungs.
According to the plans, Hatiasuni Park will be equipped with a variety of amenities designed for all age groups. The blueprint includes dedicated walking tracks, spacious open lawns for gatherings, and specially designed zones for children and senior citizens. Officials have emphasized that the design will prioritize eco-friendly elements and the use of native plants to promote biodiversity and sustainability.
Addressing a Critical Community Need
The Maitree Vihar area, housing thousands of families, has historically suffered from a lack of well-equipped public parks. Residents have frequently highlighted the need for a safe, nearby space where children can play and elders can enjoy morning walks without commuting long distances.
Sukanta Chandra Swain, Chief Horticulturist at BDA, underscored the importance of such projects. "Green spaces are not just aesthetic additions. They are vital for mental well-being and social interaction," he stated. He added that the BDA has been systematically developing playgrounds and parks across Bhubaneswar to ensure holistic and sustainable urban growth.
Local residents have welcomed the announcement with open arms. Anita Mohapatra, a homemaker from Maitree Vihar, expressed her relief, saying, "We have been waiting for a proper park for years. It will be a major relief for parents and senior citizens who currently have to travel far for quality open spaces."
Environmental and Social Benefits
Environmental experts have lauded the timing of the project. City-based environmentalist Sailabala Padhi pointed out that urban heat islands are a growing concern in Bhubaneswar. She noted that parks like Hatiasuni can play a crucial role in mitigating local temperature rise and improving overall air quality, making the city more resilient to climate challenges.
The Hatiasuni Park project is aligned with the BDA's vision of transforming Bhubaneswar into a model smart city with inclusive public infrastructure. This model has seen success in other neighbourhoods like Saheed Nagar, Nayapalli, and Patia, where similar park revamps have turned into popular community hubs.
Officials have revealed that the park will feature modern amenities including LED lighting, benches, and carefully landscaped gardens. The construction work is slated to begin shortly, with a target to complete the entire project within four months of commencement. This new green space promises to become a cornerstone for healthier lifestyles and stronger community bonds in the heart of the city.
