Bhopal Metro Launch Spurs Region's Expansion to 10,000 sq km
Bhopal Metropolitan Area Grows to 10,000 sq km

The imminent launch of the Bhopal Metro is set to be a catalyst for a much larger transformation, as the Bhopal Metropolitan Region undergoes a significant geographical and strategic expansion. The area under the region's purview has been officially increased to nearly 10,000 square kilometres, up from the previous 8,000 sq km, according to the Town and Country Planning (TNCP) department.

A Blueprint for Balanced Growth

This expansion is not merely a change on the map. It is the foundation for a comprehensive development plan guided by the forthcoming Bhopal Metropolitan Authority Act. The vision positions Bhopal as the core city, while designating Sehore and Raisen as industrial centres, Vidisha as a heritage hub, and Rajgarh as a crucial zone for agriculture and industry. The overarching goal is to ensure villages and small towns benefit from growth alongside the state capital, reducing regional imbalances.

Srikanth Bhanout, Commissioner-cum-Director of TNCP, emphasised the plan's inclusive nature. "The metropolitan plan is about harmony—villages, towns, and the city growing together," he told TOI. He added that the rules governing the Bhopal Metropolitan Region will be finalised within a week, followed by an area delineation exercise.

Enhanced Connectivity and Sustainable Development

For residents, the plan translates into tangible improvements in infrastructure and quality of life. It envisions:

  • Better connectivity through outer ring roads and integrated transport systems.
  • Smoother movement for buses, goods carriers, and future Metro connectivity networks across districts.
  • Conservation of critical environmental assets like Ramsar wetlands and forests.
  • Development of tourism circuits highlighting Vidisha's historic sites and Bhopal's iconic lakes.

Once formally notified, the Bhopal Development Authority (BDA) will act as the nodal agency for the metropolitan region. It will collaborate with CEPT University, Ahmedabad, which is tasked with preparing a detailed comprehensive development and investment plan.

Economic and Constitutional Framework

The expansion is strategically designed to boost Madhya Pradesh's economy. Industrial corridors in Sehore and Raisen are expected to attract fresh investment and generate employment, while Rajgarh's agricultural base will be linked to new and larger markets.

This move aligns with the constitutional definition of a metropolitan area under Article 243P, which specifies a region with a population of at least 10 lakh (1 million) and can encompass multiple districts, municipalities, and panchayats. The expanded Bhopal Metropolitan Region fits this framework, setting the stage for coordinated, large-scale urban and regional planning.
