Bengaluru: Rs 35-Crore Underpass at Sadahalli for Airport Traffic

Bengaluru's Airport Road Gets Major Traffic Relief with New Underpass

The National Highways Authority of India is launching a significant infrastructure project in Bengaluru. They plan to construct a six-lane underpass at Sadahalli junction on Ballari Road. This move aims to eliminate the final traffic signal on the main route to Kempegowda International Airport.

Project Details and Timeline

The underpass will stretch 750 meters in length. NHAI has allocated Rs 35 crore for this development. Construction work is scheduled to begin in February 2026. A contractor has already received the project award.

NHAI officials emphasize strict adherence to the timeline. They have formally requested permission from traffic police for necessary diversions during the construction phase.

Traffic Management During Construction

Building this underpass will require a two-year traffic diversion near Sadahalli junction. NHAI plans to minimize commuter inconvenience through careful planning.

Key measures include:
  • Widening existing service roads on both sides before main construction begins
  • Creating a concrete slab to maintain access for local residents
  • Managing increased traffic load through improved service road capacity

Historical Context and Project Revival

This is not the first attempt to solve traffic issues at Sadahalli junction. Approximately a decade ago, NHAI initially proposed an overpass solution. They later changed plans to an underpass design.

Construction actually started in 2019 but faced unexpected hurdles. Design flaws forced authorities to halt the project temporarily. Now, with fresh approval from NHAI headquarters, the project has been successfully revived.

Importance of Sadahalli Junction

Sadahalli junction serves as a critical point along the airport corridor. The 22-kilometer stretch from Hebbal to Sadahalli currently features no traffic signals on the main carriageway. This smooth flow results from existing elevated corridors and flyovers.

Sadahalli remains the only junction with a traffic signal along this important route. It accommodates both airport-bound vehicles and local residents traveling toward the city from nearby villages.

Broader Infrastructure Improvements

NHAI is implementing additional upgrades alongside the Sadahalli underpass project. Near Yelahanka Air Force Station, authorities are building a one-kilometer service road using the cut-and-cover method.

Most sections of the highway already have service roads available. The Yelahanka stretch represents the final piece needing completion.

Once all current projects finish, including recent improvements near Hebbal flyover and Jakkur Aerodrome, traffic flow on KIA Road should experience significant enhancement. Commuters can expect smoother journeys to and from the international airport.

The comprehensive approach addresses both immediate bottlenecks and long-term traffic management needs for Bengaluru's growing transportation requirements.
