Bengaluru's Double-Decker Flyover Nears Full Opening, Aims to Ease Silk Board Traffic
Bengaluru Double-Decker Flyover to Fully Open Soon

Bengaluru's First Double-Decker Flyover Set for Full Opening

The first double-decker flyover in Bengaluru, constructed by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), is poised to fully open for motorists in the coming weeks. This significant infrastructure project, developed as part of the Namma Metro Yellow Line corridor, is designed to enhance traffic movement along the notoriously congested Hosur Road stretch, offering much-needed relief to daily commuters.

Remaining 3.5 km Stretch to Open by March End

BMRCL officials have announced that the remaining 3.5-kilometer section of the flyover, extending from the Silk Board junction to Ragigudda, is scheduled to become operational by the end of March. Once this segment is opened, the entire corridor will provide a smoother and more efficient travel experience along one of Bengaluru's most traffic-heavy routes, potentially reducing commute times significantly.

Construction Nears Completion with Final Touches Underway

According to BMRCL, carriageway works, including road laying, have been successfully completed. The remaining finishing tasks are expected to be finalized by March 22, after which the flyover will be ready for vehicular use pending clearance from traffic police authorities. This meticulous approach ensures the structure meets all safety and operational standards before opening.

Traffic Flow to Improve from HSR Layout to Ragigudda

Upon receiving the necessary approvals, the flyover will open for vehicles traveling from HSR Layout towards Ragigudda. This development is anticipated to streamline traffic movement and minimize delays for motorists commuting through this critical area, contributing to a more fluid transportation network in the city.

Partial Opening in June 2024 Already Benefited Commuters

In June 2024, authorities opened one side of the double-decker flyover from Ragigudda to Silk Board, which included a ramp constructed above the Silk Board flyover junction. This initial opening, though conducted without much publicity, allowed motorists heading towards HSR Layout and Bommanahalli on Hosur Road to bypass the traffic signal at Silk Board junction, thereby improving travel times for many commuters.

Project Delays and Missed Deadlines

The project has faced multiple delays over time. BMRCL had previously announced several deadlines for opening the parallel stretch from the HSR Layout side to Ragigudda, but these were missed due to various challenges, including design changes, traffic restrictions, heavy rainfall, and other project-related constraints. Despite these setbacks, progress has continued steadily.

Positive Impact on Traffic Congestion

Traffic police officials have noted that the partial opening of the flyover has already helped alleviate congestion at the Silk Board junction. The complete opening is expected to further reduce traffic pressure in the area, offering a more sustainable solution to the city's persistent traffic woes.

Ongoing Traffic Challenges Beyond Ragigudda

While congestion at Silk Board junction may ease, officials caution that traffic management beyond Ragigudda Metro Station could remain challenging. Roads such as Marenahalli Road and nearby connecting routes are already prone to heavy traffic, indicating that comprehensive traffic solutions may still be needed in these adjacent areas.

Key Areas to Benefit from New Stretch

Once the Silk Board to Ragigudda stretch opens, vehicles heading towards BTM Layout, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, and Banashankari are expected to experience significant benefits. Currently, heavy traffic congestion often builds up below Silk Board junction, and this new infrastructure aims to mitigate such bottlenecks, enhancing connectivity across these key neighborhoods.
