Mumbai's BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project: 864 Families Receive New Homes in First Phase
In a significant milestone for urban housing in Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday handed over keys to 864 families as part of the initial phase of the Naigaon BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project. This ambitious initiative, executed through the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), marks a crucial step in transforming the lives of long-time tenants residing in the historic Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls.
Government Commitment to Housing for the Middle Class
Addressing the gathering, CM Fadnavis emphasized the state government's unwavering commitment to making the dream of homeownership a reality for Mumbai's middle-class residents. "This government is dedicated to ensuring that every middle-class family in Mumbai has a home of their own," he declared. The Chief Minister urged the beneficiaries not to sell their newly acquired properties, highlighting the long-term benefits of the redevelopment.
The event was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with MHADA Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Sanjeev Jaiswal, underscoring the project's importance to the state administration.

Under this transformative project, residents are transitioning from cramped 160 square foot homes to spacious 2BHK flats spanning approximately 500 square feet. These new units come equipped with modern facilities, provided entirely free of cost to the eligible families. "Due to persistent challenges, the state government decided to take direct charge of this project instead of relying on commercial builders," he explained.
