In a dramatic display of frustration, a woman in Shivpuri set her own e-rickshaw on fire outside an automobile showroom on Friday, alleging the vehicle was sold faulty and the company provided no effective after-sales support. The incident, which unfolded in full public view, has drawn attention to consumer grievances in the region.

Incident Details and Police Response

The event occurred in the Kotwali police station area, where the woman doused the e-rickshaw with petrol and ignited it. Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and brought both the woman and the charred vehicle to the police station. Authorities have initiated the process of filing a formal complaint and are investigating the matter thoroughly.

Background of the Couple and Purchase

The woman has been identified as Gudiya Mahaur, a resident of Fakkar Colony in Shivpuri. She and her husband, Narayan Mahaur, work as labourers and have three children to support. Approximately six months ago, the couple purchased an e-rickshaw worth about Rs 2.3 lakh through financing, hoping it would provide a steady source of income and free them from the uncertainties of daily wage labour.

Allegations of Malfunction and Neglect

According to Gudiya, the vehicle started malfunctioning within just two months of purchase and eventually became completely unusable. She alleged that for the past four months, they repeatedly approached the agency for repairs, but were consistently refused assistance. Frustrated by the lack of support, Gudiya claimed she had no option but to take this extreme step to draw attention to their plight.

She demanded that the agency either repair the e-rickshaw entirely or replace it with a new one. Failing that, she sought a refund of the amount paid so far, highlighting the financial strain the faulty purchase has caused.

Agency's Response and Counterclaims

Speaking to the media, the agency denied any wrongdoing. Representatives stated that the e-rickshaw's battery had burst and was beyond repair. They claimed the customer was advised to install a new battery but refused to do so. The company further asserted that their policy does not provide replacements in cases of battery explosion, shifting responsibility to the consumer.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Police officials confirmed they are recording statements from both parties involved in the dispute. They are examining key documents, including purchase records, warranty conditions, and service history, to ascertain the facts. Further action will be taken only after the inquiry is completed, ensuring a fair and thorough resolution.
