Vizhinjam Port Expansion to Start in Jan, Aims for Global Hub Status by 2028
Vizhinjam Port's Next Phase Construction Begins January 2028

The ambitious Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram is poised for a major leap forward, with the construction of its next phase scheduled to commence in January 2024. Kerala's Minister for Ports, V N Vasavan, announced the timeline after reviewing the progress at the port site, marking a critical step in transforming Vizhinjam into a globally recognized maritime hub.

Phased Expansion: Blueprint for a Global Port

Minister Vasavan confirmed that all preparations for the second, third, and fourth phases of construction are now complete. The official inauguration of the next phase is planned for the second week of January, with the final date to be set in consultation with the Chief Minister and the Adani Group, the port's developers.

According to the revised contract, all these phases are slated for completion by 2028. A key highlight of the second phase is the extension of the existing 800-meter berth by an additional 1,200 meters. This will create a combined 2,000-meter berth, enabling multiple large vessels to dock simultaneously. Furthermore, the breakwater will be lengthened from 2.96 km to over 3.9 km with a 920-meter extension.

Exceeding Expectations: A Stellar First Year

The minister highlighted the port's remarkable performance since commencing commercial operations. Initially targeting one million containers annually, Vizhinjam has far surpassed expectations. Data reveals that 636 ships have called at the port, handling approximately 1.4 million containers—about 400,000 more than the first-year goal.

This success is underscored by the arrival of massive container ships like MSC Turkey, MSC Irina, and MSC Verona, vessels that had not previously docked at any Asian coast. "It is a matter of pride that ships bypassing hubs like Dubai, Singapore, or Colombo are docking here," Vasavan stated. The port has also generated around Rs 970 million in tax revenue for the government so far.

Connectivity, Employment, and Future Prospects

The expansion requires the acquisition of about 50 hectares of land for yard facilities and inspection systems. Efforts are also underway to enhance multimodal connectivity. The temporarily constructed approach road will soon be inaugurated, facilitating smoother road cargo transport. Simultaneously, land acquisition for a dedicated 10.7-kilometer railway line is in progress.

Currently providing direct employment to about 1,000 people, the port's economic impact is set to multiply. Upon full completion of all phases, it is projected to create over 6,000 direct jobs and thousands more indirect employment opportunities through logistics and allied industries.

Adding to its capabilities, the port's recent designation as an Integrated Check Post (ICP) opens new avenues, including the potential development of tourism facilities in collaboration with the state's tourism department.
