In a proactive move to conserve fuel and alleviate traffic congestion, textile traders in Surat have embraced carpooling and shared transport arrangements. This initiative, spearheaded by the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association Forum (FOSTTA), calls on traders commuting to the city's textile markets to utilize shared vehicles and alternative transport systems for the greater national good.
Daily Commute Challenges
A significant number of traders travel daily from residential areas such as City Light, Vesu, Adajan, Parvat Patiya, and Dumas Road to the bustling Ring Road and Saroli textile markets. Most of these commuters rely on private vehicles, contributing to heavy traffic and fuel consumption. Under the proposed carpooling model, four to six traders from nearby localities can share a single vehicle, reducing the number of cars on the road.
Coordination via WhatsApp
FOSTTA has encouraged traders to form WhatsApp groups to organize shared travel, especially for those using four-wheelers. This digital coordination aims to streamline the carpooling process, making it easy for traders to find travel partners from their vicinity.
Kailash Hakim, president of FOSTTA, emphasized the sector's commitment to social responsibility, stating, "Surat’s textile trade has always played a leading role in national development and social responsibility." He believes this initiative will not only save fuel but also reduce traffic congestion, benefiting the entire city.
The adoption of carpooling by Surat's textile traders sets a commendable example for other industries and communities to follow, highlighting the collective effort needed to address urban challenges like traffic and fuel conservation.
