Chennai: Southern Railway has reported exceptional growth across multiple operational segments for the fiscal year 2025-26, setting new benchmarks in passenger traffic and revenue generation. The railway zone's comprehensive performance data reveals significant improvements in both passenger services and freight operations.

Passenger Traffic and Revenue Reach New Heights

The most striking achievement comes in passenger traffic, which surged to a record 7.67 lakh during 2025-26. This represents a substantial 4.9% increase from the previous year's figure of 7.31 lakh. The growth in passenger numbers was accompanied by an even more impressive rise in ticket-checking revenue, which reached 160.75 crore – a remarkable 30.93% jump from the 129.82 crore recorded in the preceding year.

Strategic Initiatives Driving Growth

According to an official release from Southern Railway, several strategic measures contributed to this outstanding performance. The railway administration implemented multiple initiatives to enhance passenger capacity and service quality:

  • Operation of special trains to meet increased demand
  • Augmentation of general second-class coaches with 294 additional coaches (including both ICF and LHB types)
  • Distribution of these enhanced coaches across 198 different trains throughout the network

Freight Operations Exceed Expectations

The freight segment demonstrated robust performance with a total loading of 42.113 million tonnes (MT) recorded during 2025-26. This achievement represents a 1.1% year-on-year growth compared to the previous year's 41.670 MT. More significantly, freight revenue reached 3,841.11 crore, successfully surpassing the targeted figure of 3,825.83 crore set for the fiscal year.

Ancillary Services Show Strong Performance

Southern Railway's ancillary business segments also posted impressive revenue figures, contributing to the overall financial success:

  1. Parcel services generated revenue of 168.64 crore
  2. Catering operations brought in 128.12 crore
  3. Parking facilities contributed 81.5 crore to the railway's income
