The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is moving forward with plans to construct two additional flyovers at Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon, a move aimed at alleviating chronic traffic congestion at one of the city's busiest intersections. Officials confirmed that a preliminary plan has been prepared to improve traffic flow between the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and Sohna Highway.
Proposed Flyover Alignments
An NHAI official stated, "We are planning two flyovers, or grade separators, at Rajiv Chowk. One will originate from the Sohna side and descend towards Sector 15 on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The second will facilitate movement from the Sector 32 side towards the Sohna Highway." The official added that the project is currently in the planning stage, with detailed alignment, design, and cost estimation to be undertaken after coordination with relevant agencies.
Part of a Broader Redesign
The proposal is part of a larger redesign strategy intended to ease congestion and enhance road safety at the junction. Last year, NHAI was tasked with conducting a feasibility study to assess traffic patterns and recommend long-term solutions for decongesting Rajiv Chowk.
Rajiv Chowk remains a critical mobility node, connecting the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Sohna Highway, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Despite the existing flyover and underpass, built at a cost of approximately Rs 250 crore, the intersection has experienced a sharp increase in vehicular load since the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway opened in 2023. The current interchange design forces commuters from Sohna Highway to exit, wait at a traffic signal, take a right turn towards Delhi, and then re-enter the expressway. Similarly, vehicles from Delhi face delays due to congestion caused by auto-rickshaws and buses near the intersection. The mixing of long-distance and local traffic without a proper interchange has created multiple conflict points.
Previous Efforts and Ongoing Challenges
In 2024, NHAI prepared a concept plan to address congestion, but the proposal did not progress. A previous traffic assessment recommended structural interventions, but space constraints have hindered implementation. The situation has become more complex with a RapidX station now proposed near Rajiv Chowk.
Resident Concerns
Prem Dewan, a resident of Sector 49, expressed frustration: "If I am going from my home towards Udyog Vihar or Cyber City, I still have to cross Rajiv Chowk. Even a simple commute becomes unpredictable during morning rush. At peak hours, just crossing Rajiv Chowk takes 20-30 minutes. The merging traffic and slow exits make it worse. Despite having a flyover and underpass, this intersection remains a serious choke point."
Malibu RWA Federation chairman Vijay Shiv added, "Even if I take the Sohna Highway, I eventually get stuck at Rajiv Chowk while descending towards Delhi or merging from Delhi side. The bottleneck doesn't end there. Even at Subhash Chowk, entry and exit points add to chaos. There is a serious design flaw as to why people have to wait at the intersection unnecessarily. It is good that the authorities finally decided to do something about it. But it should not remain a plan on paper and must be executed on priority."
