Pune's 23-km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Corridor Nears Completion, Full Launch Expected by July
The 23-kilometer Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor in Pune is now in the final phase of construction, marking a significant milestone for the city's infrastructure. However, officials have confirmed that the project is unlikely to meet its earlier target of completion by the end of March, with full passenger operations now anticipated to begin by June or July.
Trial Runs Underway Across Entire Alignment
Senior officials have stated that trial runs are currently being conducted across the entire route to rigorously test systems, track performance, and ensure operational safety. Commercial services can only commence after the concessionaire submits a formal readiness report and authorities grant final clearance, a process that is now underway.
Key Role in Expanding Pune's Metro Network
Once operational, the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor will play a pivotal role in expanding Pune's Metro network. It is designed to strengthen connectivity between the city centre and major employment hubs, particularly the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi, representing a major advancement in the region's public transport infrastructure.
Project Developed Under Innovative PPP Model
This corridor is being executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) in partnership with Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Notably, it is the first fully elevated Metro corridor in India to be developed under such a structure, setting a precedent for future infrastructure projects.
Construction Reaches 94% Completion
Officials report that overall project work has reached nearly 94% completion, with major civil works already finished. The remaining tasks primarily involve station finishing, electrical installations, signalling systems, and final operational checks, which are progressing steadily.
Full Passenger Services Likely by June or July
While initial plans suggested an April opening following trial runs, officials now indicate that full passenger operations across the entire route are more probable by June or July. This timeline depends on final approvals and readiness assessments, ensuring a safe and efficient launch.
13 of 23 Stations Already Completed
Out of the 23 stations on the corridor, 13 are fully completed, with construction and finishing works ongoing at the remaining stations. Several of these under-construction stations are close to completion, as confirmed by officials involved in the project.
Major Boost for IT Corridor Commuters
Once operational, the Metro line will connect Shivajinagar, a major transport hub in Pune, with Hinjewadi's technology hub. This is expected to significantly reduce travel time for thousands of IT professionals who commute daily on this congested route, alleviating persistent traffic issues.
Partial Opening May Not Be Feasible
Despite pressure to open the corridor in phases, transport experts argue that running services on only a portion of the route may not be practical due to the PPP model. Officials are exploring the option of launching the entire line together, even if a few stations remain temporarily closed initially.
Commuters Express Frustration Over Delays
Residents and commuters along the corridor have expressed frustration over repeated project deadline extensions, citing heavy traffic and road diversions on the Hinjewadi route. However, many also emphasize that safety and proper testing should take precedence over rushing the launch, acknowledging the importance of a reliable system.
