Ponda's power substation is taking a major step forward in strengthening its electrical infrastructure. The facility has successfully commissioned two 63MVA transformers and is now moving to replace a critical piece of equipment that has served the area for over five decades.
Replacing a 53-Year-Old Transformer
The substation is replacing a 30MVA transformer that was originally commissioned back in 1972. This Swedish-made unit has reached the end of its operational life after fifty-three years of service. Assistant engineer Vatan Kuncolienkar explained the situation clearly. He said the old transformer has already completed its expected lifespan. As it gets older, its efficiency naturally decreases. There is a real risk it could fail at any moment. Maintenance requirements also increase significantly with age, making replacement the most practical solution.
New 40MVA Unit from Hitachi
The replacement is a modern 40MVA transformer manufactured by Hitachi at its facility in Gujarat. This new unit represents a significant capacity upgrade. Assistant engineer Anuj Shatty confirmed that the new transformer and all its necessary accessories have already arrived in Ponda. A specialized technical team from Hitachi is scheduled to begin the installation process next week.
The substation procured this vital new equipment at a cost of approximately eight crore rupees. This investment is part of a broader plan to future-proof the local power grid. Kuncolienkar emphasized that load growth in the area is proportional and ongoing. The substation is making provisions to handle this increased demand effectively. "We are planning for the next 30 years," he stated, highlighting the long-term vision behind the upgrade.
Benefits of the Upgrade
The primary goal is to create a more robust and reliable 33 KV power supply system. Once the new 40MVA transformer is commissioned and operational, residents and businesses in Ponda can expect tangible improvements. The power supply should become much smoother and far more reliable, with fewer interruptions. Furthermore, the quality of the voltage delivered is expected to see a marked improvement.
This transformer replacement is a crucial infrastructure project. It directly addresses aging equipment and rising energy demands. The work ensures Ponda's electrical network is prepared to deliver stable power for decades to come.
