Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday highlighted a remarkable 166% surge in India's toffee exports over the past 12 years, drawing a direct link to a diplomatic gesture between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni. The data was shared in response to Meloni's public acknowledgment of Modi's gift of 'Melody' toffees during their meeting.
Diplomatic Sweetener Boosts Trade
In a post on social media platform X, Goyal wrote: 'India's TOFFEE TALE would surely be melody to the ears! Exports have grown nearly 166% since 2013-14.' The minister attached a graphic showing export figures rising from Rs 1,200 crore in 2013-14 to an estimated Rs 3,200 crore in 2025-26. The growth trajectory aligns with the period following the Modi-Meloni bilateral meeting in 2023, where the prime minister presented the Italian leader with a box of the popular Indian candy.
Meloni's Thanks Sparks Data Revelation
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni had earlier thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the thoughtful gift during a press conference, stating, 'The toffees were a sweet reminder of India's vibrant culture and growing economic ties.' Goyal seized the moment to showcase the broader impact of such cultural diplomacy on trade. 'This is not just about candy; it is about how personal gestures can open doors for Indian products globally,' he added.
The confectionery sector has been a key beneficiary of the government's export promotion schemes, with toffee exports now reaching markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Industry experts attribute the growth to improved quality standards and aggressive marketing campaigns backed by trade missions.
Government's Export Push Yields Results
The data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry indicates that the overall food processing sector has seen a 45% increase in exports during the same period, with confectionery leading the charge. 'The Modi government's focus on 'Make in India' and 'Export Hub' initiatives has created a conducive environment for small and medium enterprises to scale up,' said a ministry spokesperson.
Goyal's announcement comes amid a broader push to double India's total exports to $2 trillion by 2030. The toffee tale, as he called it, serves as a microcosm of the nation's economic ambitions. 'Every export tells a story of hard work and innovation. This one has a sweet ending,' the minister concluded.
