Nashik Onion Farmers Demand MSP and Market Intervention Amid Price Slump

Farmers in Nashik have intensified their demands for a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for onions and the introduction of market intervention schemes to provide relief from the declining wholesale prices of the produce. This comes as the average wholesale price has dropped significantly below production costs, leading to heavy financial losses for the agricultural community.

Financial Crisis for Onion Growers

While the cost of onion production is approximately Rs 1,800 per quintal, the average wholesale price in district Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) has plummeted to between Rs 850 and Rs 900 per quintal. This sharp decline is causing severe financial distress, with farmers unable to recover their basic production expenses, prompting widespread protests and calls for immediate government action.

Protests and Demands in Yeola

On Monday, onion farmers staged an agitation at the Yeola APMC and the office of the sub-divisional officer in Yeola tehsil. The protest was led by Prahar Sanghatana president Bachchu Kadu, with participants demanding an MSP of Rs 3,000 per quintal and the implementation of a market intervention scheme to stabilize prices and provide relief.

Farmers expressed frustration over the low rates they are receiving, stating that they are not even able to cover their production costs. "We want the state government to provide an MSP of Rs 3,000 per quintal. We also want a grant of at least Rs 1,500 per quintal to those farmers who sold their produce at lower rates during the last six months," the farmers emphasized during the protests.

Current Market Prices at Pimpalgaon APMC

Meanwhile, the situation remains dire in other parts of the district. At the Pimpalgaon APMC, the average wholesale price of late kharif onions was recorded at Rs 825 per quintal on Tuesday. The minimum and maximum prices were Rs 600 and Rs 1,040 per quintal, respectively, highlighting the volatility and low returns that farmers are facing.

The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for policy measures to support onion farmers, who are grappling with market fluctuations and inadequate pricing mechanisms. As protests continue, the focus remains on government intervention to ensure fair compensation and sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
