Nagpur Power Plant Sees Second Steam Accident in Over a Month, Injuring Eight Workers
In a concerning repeat incident, eight workers sustained injuries at the Koradi Thermal Power Station, located approximately 15 kilometers from Nagpur, after steam unexpectedly escaped from a boiler peephole on Monday morning. This accident marks the second such occurrence at the state-run power plant in just over a month, intensifying scrutiny over safety protocols and operational standards at the facility.
Details of the Latest Incident
According to an official statement released by the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco), the mishap occurred around 10:20 AM at unit number 10, which was not operational at the time. The steam release happened during slag removal activities being conducted on a platform 13 meters high. The injured individuals include four Mahagenco employees and four contract workers, identified as Sachin Bhagewar, Vivek Patil, Tejas Sonawane, AK Kazi, Nikhil Jayatgude, Kamlesh Barmate, Gulabsing Tikam, and Vilas Bansod.
All eight workers were promptly transported to a private hospital in Nagpur for emergency care. Hospital authorities reported that the patients were triaged, stabilized, and transferred to dedicated care units. While four of the injured are in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical attention, the remaining four have suffered relatively severe injuries and are under close monitoring by a specialized medical team.
Previous Accident and Safety Concerns
This incident follows a similar accident on March 11, where four workers experienced minor burn injuries to their hands and legs due to an alleged steam leak from a pipeline in the turbine maintenance section of a 660 MW unit. The recurrence of steam-related accidents within such a short timeframe has sparked significant concerns regarding the adequacy of safety measures and maintenance practices at the Koradi Thermal Power Station.
In response to the latest event, Mahagenco has initiated an internal safety audit. The company stated that no prima facie violations of safety norms have been identified so far. Additionally, Mahagenco has committed to covering the full cost of medical treatment for all injured workers, emphasizing its responsibility towards employee welfare.
Context and Official Statements
The accident occurred merely a day after the power plant celebrated a significant milestone: the arrival of the first rake from Mahagenco's Gare Palma Sector-II captive mine in Chhattisgarh. This development came more than a decade after the block was allocated, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis flagging off the rake in the presence of Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and other senior officials.
Mahagenco's statement highlighted that immediate medical assistance was provided to the injured, and the situation was brought under control swiftly. However, anonymous sources have suggested that these steam-related incidents underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive, independent safety review at the plant to prevent future occurrences and ensure worker safety.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on enhancing safety protocols and preventing similar accidents at the Koradi Thermal Power Station, a critical component of Maharashtra's power infrastructure.
