Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link to Open on Maharashtra Day
Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link Opens May 1 (28.04.2026)

The much-awaited missing link of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to be commissioned on Maharashtra Day, May 1, marking a significant milestone for commuters and the state's infrastructure. The 12-km stretch, which connects the expressway to the old Mumbai-Pune highway, will reduce travel time by approximately 20 minutes and improve safety by eliminating the need for vehicles to navigate through narrow roads and congested areas.

Project Details and Benefits

The missing link, part of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway widening project, includes a six-lane tunnel and two bridges. The tunnel, which is 4.5 km long, is the longest in Maharashtra and one of the longest in India. The project has been executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) at a cost of Rs 7,500 crore.

Once operational, the missing link will provide a seamless travel experience for motorists, bypassing the old Khandala ghat section known for its sharp curves and heavy traffic. This will not only reduce travel time but also enhance safety, particularly during the monsoon season when the ghat section is prone to landslides and accidents.

Impact on Commuters

Commuters traveling between Mumbai and Pune will benefit significantly from the missing link. The current route via the old highway takes about 30 minutes to cover the 12-km stretch, but with the new link, the same distance can be covered in just 10 minutes. This reduction in travel time is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, including office-goers, tourists, and logistics companies.

The MSRDC has confirmed that all safety measures, including ventilation systems, fire-fighting equipment, and emergency exits, have been installed in the tunnel. The authority has also conducted multiple trials to ensure the smooth functioning of the link.

Future Plans

The commissioning of the missing link is part of a larger plan to upgrade the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to an eight-lane highway. The MSRDC is also working on widening the existing expressway from six to eight lanes, which is expected to be completed by 2025. Additionally, the authority plans to develop a new 14-km link between the expressway and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The opening of the missing link is a major boost for the state's infrastructure and is expected to pave the way for further development in the region. The Maharashtra government has also announced plans to develop a new expressway between Mumbai and Nagpur, which will be the longest in the country.
