Mizoram Chief Minister Inaugurates New Areca Nut Processing Facility

In a significant boost to the agricultural sector in Mizoram, Chief Minister Lalduhoma officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art areca nut processing unit on Friday. The facility, established by SSB Agro, is located in Buhchangphai village within the Kolasib district, an area that borders the neighboring state of Assam.

Expanding Areca Nut Cultivation and Production

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Lalduhoma provided detailed insights into the current status of areca nut cultivation in Mizoram. He revealed that the state has approximately 30,000 hectares dedicated to areca nut farming. For the 2024–25 period, the estimated production is projected to reach an impressive two lakh quintals.

The CM emphasized that areca nut serves as a stable and profitable source of livelihood for numerous farmers across the region. To support this vital sector, the state government has implemented several key initiatives. These include the flagship Handholding Scheme and the CM's Special Package, both designed to facilitate expansion and enhance productivity.

Addressing Challenges and Promoting Scientific Practices

Chief Minister Lalduhoma also addressed the significant challenges faced by areca nut growers in recent years. Since 2021, there has been a large-scale loss of areca nut trees, primarily attributed to water stress and nutrient deficiency. These findings were assessed by scientists from the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI).

To combat these issues, the CM stressed the critical importance of improved plantation management. He highlighted the need for adopting scientific cultivation practices and implementing effective water conservation strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of areca nut farming in Mizoram.

Government Initiatives and Future Plans

The inauguration of the new processing unit is part of a broader government effort to enhance the areca nut industry. Chief Minister Lalduhoma underscored the administration's strong action against illegal areca nut trade, noting that such measures have already led to improved market conditions for local farmers.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of local processing to secure better prices for growers. In line with this vision, the government is currently constructing additional areca nut processing units at Chemphai in Kolasib district and Zamuang in Mamit district, which borders Tripura. These facilities are expected to become operational by next year.

State Agriculture Minister PC Vanlalruata, who was present at the event, reinforced the government's commitment. He explained that processing agricultural produce adds significant value and helps in ensuring stable markets for farmers. Looking ahead, similar processing initiatives are being planned for other key crops, including:

  • Ginger
  • Turmeric
  • Chilli

This comprehensive approach aims to diversify and strengthen Mizoram's agricultural economy, providing sustainable livelihoods for farmers across the state.
