Lakshmi Mittal Launches Ambitious Rs 70,000 Crore Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh
Billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal on Monday officially launched his most ambitious greenfield project in India, breaking ground on a massive new steel plant in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh. This landmark initiative represents a significant renewed push by ArcelorMittal into the Indian market, where the company will invest over Rs 70,000 crore to construct an 8.2 million-tonne steel manufacturing facility.
A Vision Decades in the Making
"For the last two decades, we have held a vision to build a greenfield steel plant in India," Mittal stated during the groundbreaking ceremony. "We explored numerous opportunities and waited patiently for the right moment. In 2019, together with our partner Nippon Steel, we acquired a major manufacturing presence through the Essar Steel acquisition. That was a wonderful start, but it was only the beginning of our journey here."
The move signals a strategic shift for ArcelorMittal, which had previously seen earlier greenfield project plans in states like Jharkhand, Odisha, and Karnataka fail to materialize. The company subsequently entered the Indian market through acquisitions before this current greenfield venture.
Project Details and Expansion Plans
The Andhra Pradesh plant is projected to commence operations by early 2029, significantly boosting ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India's total production capacity to approximately 23 million tonnes. Concurrently, the company's existing Hazira plant in Gujarat will undergo a major expansion, increasing its capacity from nine million tonnes to an impressive 15 million tonnes.
This investment ranks among the largest industrial commitments in Andhra Pradesh's history, second only to Google's Rs 87,520 crore investment, highlighting the growing investor confidence as India continues to expand its manufacturing infrastructure and capabilities.
Personal Reflections and Historical Context
Mittal, 75, reflected on his five-decade journey in the steel industry, recalling his first plant establishment in Indonesia back in 1976, which laid the foundation for his global empire. "Half a century has passed since I set up that first plant, and I still vividly remember the excitement of those early days," he shared. "I feel the same profound sense of possibility about what we are starting now here in India. After fifty years in the steel business, I can honestly say this project represents one of the true highlights of that entire journey."
Government Collaboration and Persistence
Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh's Minister for IT, Electronics, and HRD, recounted the persistent efforts to secure this landmark investment for the state. "In 2019, I first approached Aditya Mittal, Lakshmi Mittal's son and CEO of ArcelorMittal, about the possibility of investing in Andhra Pradesh," Lokesh explained. "At that time, he was actively exploring opportunities in other states, but we remained persistent in our discussions and presentations about what Andhra could offer."
The successful culmination of these efforts marks a significant milestone for both ArcelorMittal's expansion strategy and Andhra Pradesh's industrial development ambitions, positioning the state as a key destination for major manufacturing investments in India's evolving economic landscape.
