LPG Cylinder Crisis Disrupts Wedding Catering in Rourkela

A wedding ceremony at the Dhabaleswar temple in Sector-14, Rourkela, on Wednesday became a stark illustration of how the ongoing LPG cylinder shortage is severely impacting catering services across the region. The event, which was meant to be a joyous celebration, turned into a logistical nightmare due to the unavailability of commercial cooking gas.

Frantic Search for Cylinders Falls Short

The caterer, booked to serve dinner for approximately 700 guests, had explicitly requested the wedding organizers to provide six commercial LPG cylinders to prepare the full menu. Despite exhaustive efforts by the bride's family, only two cylinders could be secured and handed over on the morning of the wedding, March 11.

Rahul Yadav, whose sister was getting married, recounted the family's struggle. "We had planned an elaborate dinner for our guests, but with just two cylinders, the caterer had to drop all starters and snacks. Even puris were removed from the main course. We somehow managed to serve the guests and the baraat with the limited food that could be prepared, facing significant problems due to the cylinder non-availability," Yadav explained.

Caterer Forced to Slash Menu Items

Faced with the severe constraint, caterer Ajit Sahu made the difficult decision to eliminate all starter and snack items from the planned feast. "Due to the non-availability of the required number of cylinders, we had no option but to remove the starter items. We managed to prepare only a few main-course dishes using the two cylinders," Sahu stated. The menu was drastically reduced, leaving guests with a limited selection compared to the originally planned elaborate spread.

During their search for cylinders, the family was quoted exorbitant prices, with suppliers demanding up to Rs 5,000 per cylinder—a cost deemed prohibitively expensive by Yadav.

Broader Catering Industry in Peril

The crisis extends far beyond this single event. Tony Chabbra, owner of another prominent catering firm in the area, confirmed that the fear of a commercial LGP crunch is paralyzing the industry. "There is simply no commercial cylinders available. Without an assured supply, how can we confidently take bookings for parties? Our business has already taken a massive hit," Chabbra emphasized.

Caterers across Rourkela are growing increasingly anxious. Ajit Sahu expressed his desperation, noting, "If this situation continues, we will have to stop accepting party bookings altogether. Our business has been severely affected. I have another booking on March 14, but I am unsure if we will be able to fulfill it."

Wedding Season Faces Widespread Disruption

With the peak wedding season underway, caterers fear that unless the LPG supply normalizes quickly, widespread disruptions are inevitable. Many service providers are becoming reluctant to accept new orders, potentially leaving numerous families in a lurch for their celebrations.

This incident in Rourkela serves as a critical warning sign for the hospitality and catering sectors, highlighting an urgent need for resolution to prevent further economic damage and social inconvenience during one of the most important seasons for family gatherings and festivities.
