Labourer Dies at Ujjain Bridge Site, Trapped Under Iron Rods

Tragic Accident Claims Labourer's Life at Ujjain Bridge Construction Site

A devastating industrial accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Ujjain, claiming the life of a labourer who became trapped under heavy iron rods at a bridge construction site along the Indore-Ujjain road. The incident has raised serious questions about workplace safety protocols at major infrastructure projects.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The victim, identified as Ashok, was a resident of Jharkhand who had been working at the construction site with approximately fifteen other labourers for the past five months. The tragedy unfolded at the construction site opposite Shanti Palace hotel in Nanakheda area, where workers were engaged in laying a mesh of iron rods on the bridge pillars.

According to eyewitness accounts, four to five labourers were working on a pillar when the balance of the rod mesh suddenly shifted. One side of the structure tilted completely, trapping Ashok beneath the heavy iron framework at a height of approximately thirty feet.

Challenging Rescue Operation

Upon receiving information about the incident, both Neelganga and Nanakheda police teams rushed to the scene. Rescue efforts began immediately, but faced significant challenges due to the precarious situation. The iron rods weighed several tonnes, making manual movement impossible.

The rescue teams employed a gas cutter to pierce through the heavy rods, working diligently for fifty to sixty minutes before successfully extricating the trapped labourer. Despite the prompt rescue efforts, Ashok was rushed to Charak Hospital where doctors unfortunately declared him dead upon arrival.

Official Response and Investigation

Nanakheda police have registered a case regarding the incident, initiating a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pawan Baria also visited the site after learning about the tragedy.

SDM Baria revealed concerning details about the construction management, stating, "The six-lane and bridge construction contract was with Ravi Infrabuild Private Limited. The contractors and officials associated with the construction work were not present at the site when the incident took place."

Project Background and Safety Concerns

The bridge construction forms part of the Indore-Ujjain road widening project, which is being expedited ahead of Simhasth 2028, a major religious gathering expected to draw millions of pilgrims to Ujjain. This tragic incident has highlighted potential safety lapses in the execution of critical infrastructure projects.

The absence of contractors and officials at the time of the accident raises important questions about supervision and safety compliance at construction sites across India. Industrial safety experts emphasize that such incidents underscore the need for stricter enforcement of workplace safety regulations, particularly in high-risk construction environments.

This unfortunate event serves as a sobering reminder of the human cost sometimes associated with rapid infrastructure development, and the imperative to prioritize worker safety alongside project timelines and budgets.
