Kochi Factory Fire Investigation Uncovers Severe Safety Violations
An official inspection by the boilers and factories department at Cee Jee Lubricants in Kochi's Edayar industrial area has exposed glaring fire safety lapses, following a tragic incident last week that claimed the life of a migrant worker and left three others injured. The probe, conducted on Tuesday, revealed critical failures in both equipment maintenance and personnel training.
Untrained Operator and Overdue Pressure Tests Identified
Officials discovered that the operator responsible for running the thermic fluid heater was not a trained professional, a violation of basic safety protocols. Additionally, the unit had failed to conduct a mandatory pressure test on the heater's coil, which was overdue by three months. These oversights contributed directly to the hazardous conditions that led to the fire.
"We found the pump transmitting oil to the heater circuit developed a leak, and smoke billowed when the oil caught fire after contact with air," an official noted. "The deceased worker attempted to close the valve of the pump, which unfortunately aggravated the situation. Had a trained operator been present, this tragedy could likely have been averted."
Complete Lack of Fire Safety Equipment
The inspection further highlighted the absence of any fire safety equipment at the facility, compounding the risks. This deficiency meant that when the fire broke out, workers had no means to contain or extinguish it promptly, leading to severe consequences.
- Untrained operator handling critical machinery
- Pressure test overdue for three months
- No fire safety equipment available on-site
- Leaking pump identified as ignition source
Regulatory Action and Future Steps
In response to these findings, a show-cause notice has been issued to Cee Jee Lubricants, and the company has been ordered to cease operations immediately. A final report detailing the inspection's conclusions is scheduled to be submitted to the government on Wednesday, which will inform further regulatory actions and potential penalties.
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of industrial safety standards in Kerala's manufacturing sectors, particularly to protect vulnerable migrant workers who often bear the brunt of such negligence.
