In a major move to handle its rapidly growing air traffic, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is set to construct a new, state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. This critical infrastructure project aims to address the operational strain on the existing 18-year-old facility and future-proof the airport's capabilities.
Why a New Control Tower is Needed
The existing ATC tower was built nearly two decades ago when KIA commenced operations with just a single runway. Today, the airport's landscape has transformed dramatically. With a second runway and the sprawling Terminal 2 now fully operational, the airport handles approximately 750 domestic and international flights every day. This surge in aircraft movements has pushed the old tower close to its functional limits, necessitating an urgent upgrade.
A senior airport official explained the rationale behind the parallel development: "The existing ATC requires modernization with the latest technology. To carry out this upgrade seamlessly without disrupting current operations, we need another ATC functioning simultaneously, given our high traffic volume. The tender process is underway."
Features and Strategic Importance of the New Tower
Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the operator, has floated tenders for the design and construction of the new tower, targeting commissioning by 2027. The new facility is expected to bring a host of advancements:
- Significantly enhanced capacity to manage aircraft movements.
- Streamlined procedures for arrivals and departures, reducing delays.
- Bolstered safety protocols and stronger emergency response systems.
- Improved weather-monitoring capabilities.
- Upgraded amenities, including better rest areas for air traffic controllers.
This project is a cornerstone of KIA's large-scale expansion plan. The airport, which handled a staggering 4.3 crore (43 million) passengers in 2024, has an ambitious goal to scale its annual capacity to 11.4 crore (114 million) passengers. The new ATC tower is integral to supporting this long-term vision.
Bengaluru's Rising Stature in Indian Aviation
The push for new infrastructure underscores Bengaluru's escalating importance in India's aviation sector. Recent data highlights this shift: in October, KIA surpassed Mumbai in domestic aircraft movements, handling 20,819 flights compared to Mumbai's 20,540. While Mumbai still leads in total passenger volume, Bengaluru's growth in flight operations signals its expanding role as a major aviation hub.
The new ATC tower at Kempegowda International Airport represents more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a strategic investment to accommodate future growth, ensure passenger safety, and maintain operational efficiency at one of India's busiest airports.
