Lucknow: In a decisive action against fraudulent practices, King George's Medical University (KGMU) apprehended four alleged touts on Sunday. These individuals were accused of misleading patients and their attendants by promising cheaper medicines and diagnostic tests, only to divert them to private medical institutions. The suspects were caught red-handed in the cardiology department and subsequently handed over to the police.
Drive Ordered by Vice-Chancellor
KGMU officials confirmed that the operation was part of a special drive initiated by Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand. The crackdown targeted touts operating across outpatient departments (OPDs) of various departments and the trauma centre. The accused have been formally booked and transferred to police custody for further legal proceedings.
Patient Exploitation Concerns
Spokesperson Prof KK Singh revealed that the university had received numerous complaints regarding patients, particularly those from outside districts, being financially exploited. These patients were often coerced into seeking treatment at private institutions under false pretenses, leading to unnecessary expenses and potential health risks.
The KGMU administration has urged patients and their families to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. This initiative aims to safeguard the interests of patients and uphold the integrity of medical services at the university.
