The under-construction Kanke Dam Park in Ranchi, envisioned as a state-of-the-art amusement destination, has hit a major construction hurdle, with no visible progress on the ground over the past year.
Project Overview
The Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation (JTDC) initiated the renovation of the 4.45-acre park located near the picturesque Kanke Dam in 2024, aiming to boost tourism infrastructure and revenue generation in the region. Under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, JTDC contracted Kaveri Divya Resorts Private Limited to spearhead the Rs 3 crore renovation project. The private entity, which took charge in September 2024, was mandated to complete the transformation and commence operations within a year.
Reasons for the Delay
However, the project remains stalled, raising concerns over delays and accountability. A JTDC official, requesting anonymity, told TOI that the renovation has been stalled over the past year due to a neighboring vegetable market impeding the entry of construction materials to the park. “The entry route to the park is very narrow and most of the time it is filled with vegetable vendors. Despite repeated requests, they denied to move away from the road, hindering the renovation work. Hence, construction remained stalled for the past year. The corporation has appealed to the district administration to help us out and we are hopeful that soon work will resume,” the official added.
Future Plans
The official added that once completed, the amusement park will be equipped with various new facilities where people can spend quality time. “The park will be equipped with water sports, food courts, and restaurants offering a unique blend of entertainment and natural beauty to the public in the state capital. Kaveri group will manage the park for a period of 25 years and give the corporation yearly revenue of Rs 24 lakh, which will increase by 5% in every consecutive year,” he said.
