Rajasthan Government Drives PNG Adoption in Jaipur Hospitality Sector
The central government's recent policy linking 30% of commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) allocations to states' progress in expanding piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure has prompted the Rajasthan administration to actively push hotels and restaurants in Jaipur toward adopting PNG. This strategic move aims to align with national energy transition goals while addressing local supply constraints.
District Officials Launch Outreach Campaign
District authorities have initiated comprehensive outreach efforts to encourage commercial establishments to apply for PNG connections. Jaipur District Supply Officer Priyawarit Singh Charan explained that this proactive approach serves dual purposes: "We are engaging in detailed discussions with hotel associations and restaurant owners, motivating them to submit applications for PNG connections. This data collection will enable oil marketing companies to accurately assess demand patterns and develop structured expansion plans."
Infrastructure Limitations Pose Significant Challenges
Despite governmental enthusiasm, industry representatives highlight substantial infrastructure barriers. Torrent Gas, currently the sole PNG provider in Jaipur, operates primarily within the Vishwakarma Industrial Area and select sections of Sikar Road. The existing network supports merely 22 commercial connections, starkly contrasting with approximately 21,000 LPG users throughout the city.
Tarun Kumar Bansal, President of the Hotels and Restaurant Association of Rajasthan, acknowledged willingness to cooperate during LPG shortages but emphasized practical constraints: "All associations stand ready to support government initiatives during crises. However, Jaipur's PNG infrastructure remains considerably limited compared to cities like Jodhpur. We have formally requested the oil marketing company to provide detailed operational area maps to assess feasibility."
Exploring Alternative Solutions
Facing infrastructure gaps, industry leaders are considering interim alternatives. Bansal noted: "During supply emergencies, electricity emerges as the most viable alternative energy source for commercial operations. This underscores the need for diversified energy strategies while PNG networks develop."
Long-Term Vision with Immediate Benefits
District officials maintain that current efforts will yield both immediate and future advantages. Charan elaborated: "This push targets long-term energy sustainability while providing short-term relief. If consumers in the Vishwakarma Industrial Area successfully transition to PNG, liberated LPG supplies can be redirected to other urban sectors experiencing greater shortages."
The Rajasthan government's initiative reflects broader national energy policy shifts, balancing ambitious transition goals with ground-level implementation realities.
